Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 1/17/2011

Happy birthday to Betty White! And happy Martin Luther King, Jr Day, too — MLK’s actual birthday was Jan 15th. Still, it seems fitting that today begins with two aspects that suggest taking note of your dreams upon waking…

If you’re working today, you may have a surprising amount of information to process this morning. Be kind to your machines and your tech support people, lest they be overloaded. Moon goes void at 12:57 PM NY time, then enters Cancer at 2:29 PM. This suggests a slow start and/or an unexpected departure from your usual morning routine on the West Coast, and a perfect lunch break on the East Coast.

Moon in Cancer for the remainder of the day suggests a need to focus on the comforts of home and whatever else makes us feel secure therein. Speeches heard this afternoon may wax rhapsodic about patriotism, homeland, mom and apple pie. In the headlines, I anticipate more  leaps in consciousness in the areas of technology and the cosmos (including astrology) and the humanitarian spirit.

This day affords an opportunity to apply an innovative, expansive approach to your make-it-happen strategy you’ve been acting on since the New Moon on Jan 4th. Communicate. Network. Concentrated mental focus is also favored — of a persuasive, persistent, investigative kind  — watch the headlines for more dirt on your favorite government institution — as well as for an opportunity to state your case. Watch for brutal honesty in power struggles, too.

Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 1/14/2011 and the Weekend; More on the Myth of the 13th Sign

No exact aspects during business hours on both coasts, though toward the end of the day we can tune in to a stabilizing connection between earthy Moon in Taurus and Sun in Capricorn. See how much you can consolidate today and enjoy the evening, which offers the potential for epicurean delights. We shift into a much more talkative, less tactile space on Saturday, as Moon enters Gemini, the sign that NEEDS to inform. Note your dreams.

The highlight of the weekend is Mars entering airy Aquarius, suggesting that actions will be taken over the next few weeks that demonstrate individual freedom, social significance and humanitarian concerns. If that sound like a contradiction, well…that’s the nature of Aquarius.

Meanwhile, it is intriguing to see how many people are posting that “article” I wrote about on January 4th — the one in which an astronomer announced that your Sun Sign wasn’t really your Sun Sign, and, oh by the way, there are 13 signs in the zodiac. HuffPo, The Chicago Tribune and an NBC affiliate are just a few media outlets that carried — and not a single one appears to have interviewed an astrologer for a response and clarification! So…to clarify (in case you missed it on the 4th): the writer of the “article” in question appears to not understand the difference between the sidereal and tropical zodiacs, and he doesn’t seem to understand that there is a difference between the constellations and the signs of the zodiac as applied in various systems of astrology.

Check out these nifty articles and you’ll learn about the precession of the equinoxes and other cool things about your home planet: http://www.astrologycom.com/precession2.html — and please check out the forecast I posted on Jan 4th for more details — and email me if you still have questions. Bottom line: your Sun Sign in Western astrology has not changed!

(with gratitude to astrologer Jill Amery for the link to the articles — I like them much better than the ones I found last week)

Astro-logical Forecast for Thursday 1/13/2011

Look to the Moon in Taurus, which needs to build and preserve security and stability, to bring a calmer vibe to the next couple of days. This is your chance to give form to the ideas and projects you have on your plate. Be productive!

Mercury, ruling mind, communication and travel shifts from opinionated Sagittarius into practical, make-it-happen Capricorn for the next few weeks. This could also bring those inclined to high-flying and/or exaggerated opinions back down to earth — though it may take a day for us to adjust to this shift in communications and thought.

Meanwhile, in Arizona, thousands were cheered by the news that Gabrielle Giffords opened her eyes for the first time since Saturday. President Obama announced the news, saying, “”She knows we’re here, and she knows we love her.”

Given that Giffords has Moon in Leo, a placement suggesting a strong need to be loved and adored,  this struck me as a particularly fitting — and potentially healing — public announcement. All week I’ve been thinking of writing that if you happen to believe that thoughts can influence others who are thousands of miles away, it couldn’t hurt to send a loving message to Gabrielle Giffords. And if you’re personally involved with someone who has Moon in Leo — you now have a piece of information you can use to keep that relationship flowing smoothly : )

Astro-logical Forecast for Wednesday 1/12/11

Yet another potentially highly charged full business day of action on both coasts — can you stand it? Moon is still zipping through Aries, a sign that sometimes falls down stairs because it’s faster than walking. With Mars, ruler of Aries in an easy, communicative connection between innovative Uranus, I encourage you to take a fresh approach. Just hours ago, for example, I was at a networking gathering of media folks & I decided to stick that silly adhesive name tag they always ask you to wear right on my pint of Stella Artois. Who would have thought it would have attracted such a positive response? Today, try something new and inspired!

Read yesterday’s forecast for thoughts on the First Quarter Moon, exact this AM at 6:31AM. Patience may be called for later in the day — say around 6PM NY time — when that impulsive Moon squares offs against feisty Mars. Could be a few emotional spats in the air, so resist the urge to engage.

After a brief Moon void at 9:47PM NY,  Moon enters placid Taurus at 10:37PM NY, turning down the volume for a quiet night of sweet music and other delights in the safe, secure comfort of wherever you call home.

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday 1/1/11 & More on Ted Williams

More of the same from yesterday: big and/or inflated ideas, opinions, striving for expression and respect. If it’s your idea, of course it’s brilliant;  the ideas of others — well — perhaps those will provide fodder for a rowdy debate. Challenges are suggested by the end of the day on both coasts, when it may become clear that passion and impulsive drive need to be shaped and structured in order to take form. That challenge will come just before Wednesday’s First Quarter Moon — perhaps adjusting your “make it happen” agenda from last week’s New Moon. And that’s all good, right?

I promised a reader I’d take a look at the horoscope of Ted Williams — the man with the “golden voice” — and his sudden rise to fame. Now before I even found the birth date on line, I expected to see at least one of two things: 1) something major that would have been triggered by the potential “sudden windfall that  disrupts the status quo” of last week’s Jupiter-Uranus conjunction; and 2) something in his chart connected to the Aries Point. Regular readers of this column will recall the Aries Point corresponds to the first day of each season: the equinoxes and the solstices. If you have a planet close to zero degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, it will likely “pull focus” in your horoscope — striving for recognition.

So here’s Ted Williams: 9/22/1957, birth time unknown, in Bed-Stuy (Brooklyn)  NY. What do we see? Sun and Mars at 29 Virgo — within half a degree of the Aries Point of zero Libra, triggered by an opposition from that “sudden windfall” of Jupiter-Uranus! Isn’t astrology fascinating?

If you enjoy this daily forecast, I would be thrilled if you shared it with all your friends. If you do and something magical happens, I will be able to write about my “sudden windfall”, too! : )

Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 1/10/11: Shootings in Tucson, AZ

Any wild dreams upon waking? Contacts from Moon  to expansive Jupiter, erratic Uranus (all three in free-flowing, intangible Pisces) and mental Mercury in high-flying Sagittarius during the wee hours certainly suggests that possibility. I dreamed I was working as a temporary secretary at a local, independently-owned TV station, where I crashed the entire broadcasting machine by selecting the option “exit” while editing a Word document. It made no sense to me whatsoever that the station’s ability to function was so vulnerable. Hmm.

A slow start or twist in your morning routine was also suggested on the East Coast, as Moon was void between 6:12 – 10:24AM NY time, before zooming into Aries, sign of me-me-me — and oh, did I mention ME? Moon in Aries suggests opportunity to more forward on pioneering projects — to take the lead, to be courageous and to inspire. Onward!

On the downside, Moon in Aries can suggest a lack of consideration, pushiness, brashness and general insensitivity to others in the rush to put forth a Big Idea. Communication today may indeed be brilliant and inspired, but it also may feel frenetic or disruptive to the status quo, as suggested by contacts to opinionated Mercury in Sagittarius from the aforementioned technologically brilliant, but erratic Uranus and nebulous, transcendental Neptune. Do be especially mindful if you are traveling — and try not to overload your machinery.

As for the utterly upsetting headlines from Arizona over the weekend, I note the following — with a silver lining promised at the end of these notes:

1) This senseless violence, perpetrated by an individual “revolutionary” acting against a perceived governmental “control” is no surprise, given current and especially approaching planetary patterns;

2) The chart of the State of Arizona (Feb 14 1912) shows last week’s expansive/erratic Jupiter-Uranus hook-up challenging — for the third time since 2010 — ruthless Pluto on Jan 4 and 5, preceding another challenge from nebulous Neptune to Arizona’s Sun in Aquarius (freedom-loving, eccentric) during all of 2009 into 2010; sounds like a compelling illustration for the weirdness and brutally divisive tone we’ve been witnessing therein;

3) Though we do not have a confirmed birth date for the perpetrator, we have enough (Sept 1988) to see that Jupiter-Uranus hook-up triggering (no pun intended) Jared Loughner’s opinionated ambition and intensity merging “old guard” with “avant garde” suggested by his Saturn and Uranus in Sagittarius; a likely trigger to his Mars (action) from ruthless Pluto, with his Sun triggered either by Pluto or Uranus. And yes, we see in ten seconds the potential for delusion (a subversive Mars retrograde in Aries likely challenged by nebulous Neptune), perhaps made even more so if he was born around Sep 28th, which would then put his Sun under that weird Mars-Neptune spell, too.

4) The horoscope of Gabrielle Giffords shows Mars and Uranus under stress and tension from Pluto throughout 2010 — these planets are not marshmallows. And yes, there are other patterns, too — but I would rather focus attention and intention on Congresswoman Giffords — and all those who were hurt — by sending healing thoughts of light and love their way.

The point is that there are planetary patterns throughout which suggest the potential for events as they occurred. Coincidence or conspiracy?  Even when bearing in mind that, as my teacher, Noel Tyl always says, “Planets don’t do anything; people do” — meaning that their “energy” (for lack of a better word, is neutral. We decide if we are going to be delusional or inspired; destructive or regenerative, etc — it is all. Up. To us.

The silver lining:  if you haven’t heard about Daniel Hernandez, the 20-year old intern whose response-ability likely saved Congresswoman Giffords’ life, this story may inspire you to re-read your First Aid Handbook — or at least go out and buy one: http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/01/09/20110109daniel-hernandez-gabrielle-giffords-arizona-shooting.html#ixzz1AXTIZNsb

Have a positive, pioneering day!

Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 1/7/2011 and the Weekend

The poster child for the big meeting between expansive Jupiter and innovative, “out of the blue” Uranus in compassionate, intangible Pisces has to be Ted Williams, the formerly homeless man with the “golden voice”, whom the entire free world was moved to assist, as anyone who doesn’t live under a rock now knows:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYUYVGTpjL8

Jupiter and Uranus met up at 7:52AM on Tuesday, the day Ted’s story was posted on YouTube. The rest is history. Jupiter and Uranus connections are often experienced as sudden windfalls and changes of fortune, and it’s always fun to see what happens when these two planets are active in your horoscope.  I suspect that Ted Williams is not the only miraculous story that can occur this week — or next — even if it doesn’t make headlines. I challenge you to make a miracle happen: seize or create an opportunity — or look around you and see who might need a helping hand. Be a hero!

Friday we have a bit of a wobble: Venus finally leaves Scorpio, bringing relief from the intensity of relationships we’ve experienced over the past few months — and moves into rambunctious Sagittarius. Well, that ought to lighten things up; enjoy the gamble/gambol over the next few weeks. It may take time to adjust to the new vibe, and initial enthusiasm may be dampened by the potential wet blanket of Saturn’s challenge to the Sun early Friday AM (see earlier forecasts this week for details). But this too, shall pass. Moon is void from 3:51 to 9:57PM NY time, potentially throwing twists into scheduled meetings, enhancing brainstorming capacity and suggesting a major chill. Here in New York, our twist will likely come from travel plans delayed by more snow. Yippee!

Saturday and Sunday are relatively quiet. No major planetary activity and no void-of-course Moon to interfere with post-holiday shopping sprees. Moon is in Pisces, suggesting a weekend of going with the flow and exploring intangibles: art, spirit and music. Relax now, because come Monday the buzz will begin again. I’m anticipating intriguing breakthroughs and big and brilliant ideas– get ready to put them out there.

Astro-logical Forecast for Thursday 1/6/2011: New Congress, New Speaker

We haven’t had an exact aspect to the Moon since  7:15AM NY yesterday, and we won’t have another until 7:59PM tonight.  What we do have is a approaching challenge to Sun (the energy of the day) from restrictive Saturn in “hey! that’s not fair!!” or “mind your manners!” Libra, exact on Friday AM at 9:09 NY time. Feeling any tension and frustration? Keep on trucking! You can do it!

Without exact aspects, planets can “run wild” in a horoscope. When Moon in Aquarius runs wild, as it was for most of yesterday and most of today, you end up with an overwhelming need to be of social significance and innovative – or at least be seen that way. Mars, symbolizing the our drive to apply energy/take action is also running wild in the “make it happen” sign of Capricorn. And so is Pluto, which wrote the book on ruthless power mavens. That’s the blueprint of the energy that marks the start of the 112th Congress. Fascinating! And it took our new House majority less than half a day to strip six delegates (who I’m quite sure represent people who pay US taxes) of certain voting rights http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/05/house-gop-delegate-voting-rights_n_804906.html Ruthless power running wild? Readers, what do you think?

Our new Speaker of the House, John Boehner, born 11/17/1949 in Reading, OH is likely keenly aware of power, being a Scorpio ruled by the aforementioned Pluto. I don’t know what time he was born, but even so, his horoscope has a few notable patterns. First is a likely strong Moon-Neptune connection in socially-oriented Libra. Understand that the Moon defines the reigning need of the individual. And Neptune tends to dissolve whatever it touches — sometimes into puddles. Neptune can be vision, idealism, dreams, fantasy, escapism, drugs, alcohol, spirituality; it can be sublimely inspirational, too and it works well in the charts of healers, artists, con artists and other visionaries.

A person with Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Libra might assume that everyone else thinks the way he does, be of great personal conviction and might need others to appreciate him so much that he gets elected Speaker of the House. Add in that Neptune energy and you have a man who might need to be a visionary. But what kind of vision?  Hmmm. “The American Dream?” Another notable pattern specific to Boehner’s  horoscope is Uranus, symbolizing an intensity in areas of independence, rebellion, challenging the status quo, freedom, innovation — running wild! And right now, all that intensity is being pushed into prominence and empowered by transiting Pluto opposing that Uranus — and has been since early  2010.  Finally, we note a focused, disciplined and potentially militaristic connection between Mars and Saturn in Virgo, a sign which needs to always always be correct. Compromise, anyone?

But hey, look at it this way: you don’t have to be the 112th Congress to take advantage of the potential for a power grab in your favor. It’s Thursday. Seize the day!

Astro-logical Forecast for Wednesday 1/5/2011

Heads up, East Coast. Today begins with a void-of-course Moon from 7:35AM – 11:08AM NY time. If your morning starts slow; if you sleep in late; if you forget to grind the coffee beans before putting them in the coffee maker, blame the void.  Use the cosmic interlude to mull over whatever brainstorms came to you upon waking…or maybe even in your dreams.

After 11:08AM NY, Moon enters socially significant Aquarius, where it delights in connecting all kinds of people with other kinds of people. Keep on pushing through with your ambitions for the New Moon cycle — heck, for the whole year, despite any restriction or limitation that may rear its head by Friday. You shall overcome

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday 1/4/2011 — New Moon in Capricorn; Sidereal vs. Tropical Zodiacs

A reader forwarded the following “article” posted on about.com entitled “Your 2011 Horoscope? It’s Wrong: Your Sign Isn’t What You Thought It Was”http://www.newser.com/story/108793/your-2011-horoscope-its-wrong.html  Would I like to comment on it, she asked. Ohhhhhh…would I!

The “article” (with a byline, no less) was essentially a link to another post by someone named Robert Roy Britt entitled “Why Your 2011 Horoscope Is All Wrong” http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/etc/horoscope-2011-astrology-sign.html? and it is a fine example of the incredibly uninformed things that can be written by someone who knows absolutely nothing about astrology — or real journalism — and isn’t the least bit interested in learning.

“The folks over at Astrology.com have outdone themselves with a set of predictions for 2011 based on your horoscope,” writes Britt. “Problem is, the predictions are all wrong. Why? Because, simply, the stars are not aligned as the prognosticators think.Your zodiac sign… was originally based on the constellation the sun was in the day you were born. Thing is, Earth wobbles, a phenomenon called precession.”

You can almost hear Britt rubbing his hands together with glee as he continues, “Over the 2,500 years or so since the zodiac was established, your sign has moved about a month relative to the sun and stars. You’re no longer what you think you are, and so if you’re an astrology buff, perhaps poised to make a New Year’s resolution based on the stars and a reading of your supposed personality, know that you’re actually following observations, predictions and advice aimed at another person entirely.”

Good Lord, where do I start??? First, the 2011 predictions posted on Astrology.com are based on your Sun Sign, not your horoscope. Your horoscope is the unique pattern of the planets at the moment of your birth, relative to where you were born, and there are a lot more moving parts in a horoscope than just your Sun Sign. Second, Britt has no idea what “the folks over at Astrology.com” a.k.a. “the prognosticators” think about how the stars are aligned — because he clearly never bothered to ask them to justify this apparent discrepancy.  If he were a real journalist, he might have researched the history of astrology (just look up “precession of the equinoxes” or “history of astrology” in Wikipedia), and discovered that yes, thanks to precession, the actual constellation of Cancer now lies in the zone of the TROPICAL zodiac known as Leo; the constellation Leo now lies in the zone of the tropical zodiac known as of Virgo, etc., etc.

Wait? “Tropical” zodiac? What’s that? Is there more than one zodiac? Yes! There is a SIDEREAL zodiac, which fixes the system of astrology to the background stars, i.e. the orientation of the Earth relative to the galaxy. Vedic (Hindu) astrologers use the sidereal zodiac. The sidereal zodiac reflects the phenomenon of precession.

But Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which fixes the system of astrology to the seasons, i.e. the orientation of the Earth relative to the solar system. In Western astrology, the vernal equinox (first day of spring) is always always always zero degrees of Aries. If you are born at 7PM March 20th, 2011 in NY, NY your Sun will be at zero degrees of Aries in Western astrology. However, to an sidereal astrologer using the Krishnamurti zodiac with Hindu Bhava houses, your Sun will be at 5 Pisces. Whoa! Head trip!! How can this be?? How can there be more than one system of astrology and have them all work (which they do!)???

Think of all astrology — whether it’s Vedic (Hindu), Chinese, Mayan or Western  (and there are sections on each on Astrology.com) — as a SYMBOLIC LANGUAGE, like English or Chinese. How do languages work? There is no intrinsic meaning to the letters and words I am typing right now, but anyone who understands English will presumably understand them. Fascinating! And languages evolve over time, reflecting the evolving consciousness of those who create it. Chaucer and Shakespeare can be challenging for present-day English speakers — right? English has evolved!  Chinese, Spanish and Inuit are all valid languages…with nuances that reflect the their respective values and cultures, yes? Do you need words that describe all the different kinds of snow in the Arctic? Then learn Inuit; English is rather limited in comparison.

I see Western astrology as a language that expresses a point of view that places a greater value on life as it is actually experienced here on Earth (“tied to the seasons, or Earth relative to the Sun and our solar system”), and more specifically to life from the point of view of the Northern Hemisphere (it’s summer in South Africa right now). And it works! And so do the systems of Mayan, Chinese and Vedic astrology, which express a different point of view. Don’t believe me? Book a consultation with a skilled and reputable astrologer in any system and you will find truth within it. If Western astrology intrigues you, I can help; that’s my expertise.

Is astrology a science? Not exactly. Astrologers are more like medical doctors and psychologists, who use truckloads of analytical data combined with the art of interpretation — which we then apply to the unique reality of the individual horoscope. “The patterns of the planets, fascinatingly, reflect patterns in life development,” my mentor, Noel Tyl, often says. That’s really all there is to it. I can’t explain why the system works (though I have theories); but I do know, from years of observation and research by myself and other astrologers, that it does.

OK..on to the forecast. New Moon in “make it happen” Capricorn at 4:03AM NY time — and a partial solar eclipse, too. Capricorn is an earthy, ambitious, practical energy that is only too happy to spring into action. Add a big hook-up between expansive, enthusiastic Jupiter and radical, innovative, tech-savvy, magical, independent, erratic Uranus that occurred at 7:52 AM and the sky is the limit. Or not — maybe we’ll hear some startling news from the cosmos today, too. Oh wait, we just did — and I spent most of today’s column talking about it. ;)

Your mission during this New Moon cycle is to make it happen. All the planets are direct until Jan 25th — there’s nothing held back — no second agenda.  Wow! What a way to start the New Year. Go for it!!!
