The only other exact aspect of the day hits at 4:34PM ET — a challenge to the pioneering Aries Moon from ruthless Pluto in practical Capricorn. This could be a power play or an emotional catharsis. Let go of whatever needs to be released without looking back; an Aries Moon needs to move forward.
This fiery, inspiring and passionate energy carries us through tomorrow, which is Valentines’ Day. Another day of Moon-voidness in dreamy Pisces, as you may recall from yesterday’s forecast. What twists, flakes and other delays in your efforts to move forward in a straight line have you experienced since noon ET on Monday? Today offers more of the same, including continued structuring and researching new platforms to launch your visions, courtesy of cooperative contacts among mental Mercury, disciplined Saturn and potent Pluto. which are exact today. Brainstorm away, and make some time to play, too.
A notable shift in tone should manifest once the Moon engages in pioneering Aries at 8:51PM ET, minutes before President Obama’s State of the Union speech at 9PM ET. Talk about going from zero to sixty. Will we be inspired to respond to his call to action? Expect equally impassioned initiatives proposed in the response given by the other side.
Meanwhile, the Pope shocked most everyone yesterday by announcing his resignation. In my daydreams I have been imagining him over the past few weeks, meditating on the Sabian Symbol for this lunar cycle (“a rug placed on the floor for children to play”), recognizing that the New Moon opposes his Neptune (need for a creative/spiritual escape) and thinking, “Right. I’m outta here”. After all, he does have access to the world’s largest astrological library (those early astronomers were also astrologers). All kidding aside, it is suggested in the Pope’s horoscope that health concerns might be an issue during the past couple of years, with a need for streamlined focus and conservation of energy. That his announcement would come as a surprise should surprise no one; the horoscope has Mercury (communication) conjunct disruptive Uranus, and both are squared by willful Mars. Sudden outbursts would be expected, and what was expressed would need to attract prominence. Recall what I wrote at the end of Sunday’s forecast about the need for people with planets at 6 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces to have a release? The Pope is in that category…and upcoming transits suggest this is a fine time to make an easy transition in his domestic life.
I can’t help but also note in this horoscope a need for authority and control that dominates the persona and is likely related to issues with the father. Also intriguing are strong challenges to the balance-needing Libra Moon from power-seeking Pluto and rebel Uranus, coupled with equally strong challenges to the lunar node from aggressive Mars, mental Mercury and freedom-needing Uranus (again!). Translation: this would prompt a skilled astrologer to inquire about possible combative power struggles with the mother/maternal figure in the Pope’s early home life, and how this relationship was carried forward in adult relationships with women. It was therefore fascinating to read a sharply-worded op-ed by playwright John Patrick Shanley (author of the Pulitzer prize-winning “Doubt“) about this same question in this morning’s New York Times.
In other news reflecting the tough as nails potential of yesterday’s chilly challenge between stern Saturn and loving Venus, here’s a lengthy but essential article about the Navy SEAL who shot Osama bin Laden. Far more compelling than Zero Dark Thirty, it offers a gripping account of that mission. Yes, it was tough, but how the story ends is even tougher. You won’t believe what this SEAL is doing now.

East Coasters, if you must ship something of dire consequence, get it off your desk before the dreamy and intuitive Pisces Moon goes void of course at 12:03PM ET. We’ve got a looonnnnnnng time between then and 8:51PM ET Tuesday, when the Moon finally engages in Aries — and then it’ll blast off like a rocket. Wednesday, Thursday & Friday are super-fabulous for getting things off the ground. So what to do between now and then?
Start by re-reading yesterday’s New Moon forecast with special attention to creating a space for play, as only the unique individual that you are can do. Let your intuition guide your communications and actions. I can’t tell you how delighted I was to see this article about play and productivity sitting on the NYT home page when I woke up during Sunday’s Moon void. Are the editors of the Times in tune with the cosmos or what? Make time for play, for visualization and serious brainstorming/drafting over the next 36 hours. Structuring and researching new platforms to launch your visions are favored, courtesy of cooperative contacts among mental Mercury, disciplined Saturn and potent Pluto. If you were born around the 1st of March, June, September or December…or if you have planets or angles around 11 degrees of Pisces, Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius this especially applies to you.
The other planetary pattern exact today can provide necessary discipline and controls, even though some will find it a bitch. And this is chilly Saturn in Scorpio (matters of life and death), squaring Venus (women, money, aesthetics, social expression) in humanitarian Aquarius at 1:42AM ET. If you are on the bitchy receiving end of this transit, see if the old cliche “whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger” can apply. Here’s an example from today’s NYT: how some college students worked their you-know-whats off to pay for their tuition — tough, disciplined and inspiring. Another example of formidable discipline and resolve in a most feminine form is a front page piece on how Gabrielle Giffords, whom you may recall was shot in the head at point blank range two years ago, is evolving into a passionate advocate for sane gun controls. Did you see her one-minute speech before Congress a few weeks ago — well you must see it now and here it is — deeply moving. And strangely in synch with the Crosby, Stills & Nash song Find the Cost of Freedom popping into my head while writing the New Moon forecast. In other news, more and more women are buying guns, says the homepage of the NYT as of 6PM ET.

On a lighter note…perhaps you read that someone hacked into an email account belonging to a member of the Bush family. Apparently the most startling revelations were self-portraits by George W. Bush. Since when did W. become a painter? And why is it so newsworthy that NYT columnist Maureen Dowd was compelled to write about it? With a quick glance at Bush’s horoscope, I’m looking for current hits from the Uranus-Pluto square, given that he is in the headlines and is therefore prominent. Instantly we see nebulous Neptune (vision, high art) being supercharged by this square…and the areas of the horoscope that are highlighted include: mindset/imagination/communication and siblings (the paintings were made public via his sister’s email account!), big picture thinking/publishing and the public. Transits to Neptune often coincide with an involvement in the creative arts…and also spiritual or charitable concerns. That’s the upside. The downside can be a sense of bewilderment, betrayal or an escape into fantasy, including drugs or alcohol.
Since George W. Bush gave up drinking years ago, and his horoscope suggests a need for magical thinking and to communicate his visions with enthusiasm, applying his imagination in a painterly way makes sense. Another suggestion of artistic inclination is artsy Venus (social expression, including aesthetics) aligned with Midheaven, which refers to career/public status. Isn’t that interesting? He’s kept a low profile during the last few years, which also makes sense given that Saturn has been at the bottom of his horoscope. This suggests a need to shore up one’s foundation, focusing on personal concerns of home and family. Patterns in the horoscope suggest that 2014-2016 will be an extremely significant period of life development for Mr. Bush, with themes of emancipation, empowerment and expansion being the potential upsides. Changes are absolutely, positively guaranteed.
Why not gift George W. Bush with a personal astro-logical consultation, so he can plan a strategy to maximize opportunities suggested by upcoming transits to his horoscope. The New Moon in Aquarius officially begins at 2:20AM ET, offering us an opportunity to re-set intentions and goals for the next lunar cycle. Next week will be about planting seeds to turn your intentions into reality. Around the 17th, on the First Quarter Moon, we can expect a challenge to those goals, with appropriate adjustments made. At the time of the Full Moon on the 25th, we can expect illumination on the success or failure of our goals for the cycle. If we succeeded, we can consciously release our success into our reality; if we failed, we let go of whatever did not work. After the Third Quarter Moon on March 4th, we can review our achievements, tie up loose ends and get ready to begin another New Moon on March 11th.
A New Moon in Aquarius suggests a need — or an opportunity — to break free of limitations to your unique individual expression. Aquarius is an airy/mental, organizing and humanitarian energy that seeks to be of social significance, often serving a social cause on one fringe or another. The Aquarian need for breakthroughs and/or breakouts can be shocking or at the very least, disruptive to the status quo. How are you planning to shake things up, to break free, to express yourself without compromise during this lunar cycle?

You see what I mean?
This New Moon occurs at 22 degrees of Aquarius, so it will be more active in your life if you were born around the 10th of February, May, August or October…or if you have a planet at 22 degrees of Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio. This New Moon energy suggests a spark of inspiration that aims to be helpful and liberating in a big, attention-getting way. I say this because in the chart for the New Moon, the Sun and Moon are not connected any other planets in the chart. They are isolated — which suggests to me that certainly in headlines, we are likely to see a number of declarations of independence or breakthroughs that are challenging to integrate. It would not surprise me if the most startling events involve women/the feminine/maternal. These will likely be countered by a few mind-boggling efforts to impose control.
In contrast to the isolated Sun-Moon conjunction, there are plenty of connections among the rest of the planets, suggesting a spirit of — if not cooperation — then certainly communication. A pile-up of planets in watery Pisces, challenged by expansive Jupiter in information-junkie Gemini suggests grand visions and/or delusions (take your pick) initiated with boundless energy. The major challenge to the vision is one of seemingly stubborn, fixed cost. If cuts need to be made, planetary patterns for this cycle do suggest practical solutions can be found to produce a functional Plan B, if the parties involved can be more sensitive and flexible.
For some reason, the Crosby, Stills & Nash song “Find the Cost of Freedom” has now popped into my head, demanding it be shared. So here is the original (on glorious crackling vinyl); here is a shorter, recent concert version (still glorious) and here is the backstory to the song, which was written in the aftermath of the shockingly disruptive Uranus-Pluto conjunction of the mid-60s. As regular readers know, we are just beginning a potentially more disruptive period of several years, marked by the current Uranus-Pluto square. Apply this song to themes we’ll be seeing at a national and global level during this lunar cycle.
The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon supports the concept of dreams we create to embellish, cushion or cover a hard reality. For 22 Aquarius, we find “a rug placed on the floor for children to play”. Think about it. With gratitude to Sabian Symbol guru Blain Bovee for pointing out that the nature of play (Latin ludere) is “to go beyond bounds of normal containment” — and that is what you are encouraged to do over the next four weeks. Test your limits — and if you can’t play for the fun of it, make it a science project (Aquarius is very tech-savvy). Perhaps your focus may be to simply embellish or cushion a space where you can comfortably play, which for me means creating a more ergonomically correct workspace so I can calculate charts and write forecasts. What about you?
You’ll have plenty of time to mull over your grand scheme for play on Sunday, as the Moon goes void-of-course at 2:20AM ET…not to enter Pisces (more dreams!) until 4:20PM ET. Do something physical while you are mulling, especially if you were born around the 26th of February, May, August or November…or if you have a planet at 6 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces. Otherwise, a potentially bombastic connection between Mars and Jupiter may make you insufferable.
Finally, for those who are curious, here’s an explanation of the origin of the Sabian Symbols. If you are not conversant in the language of astrology, just accept the premise that in a New Moon chart, the Sabian Symbol provides a clue to the agenda for the whole cycle. I see this a lot in the headlines. For example, last month’s symbol was “a general acknowledging defeat gracefully,” and Lance Armstrong finally admitting he doped was one of the biggest stories. Coincidence or conspiracy?

Another slow start or twist in your morning routine is suggested, given that the Moon is void-of-course and won’t fully engage until it enters Aquarius at 2:17PM ET. If you’re in New England, the flake factor is even higher, as we anticipate a potentially monstrous winter storm. Flights and trains are already being cancelled; people are being encouraged to stay home. Snow day — no problem! We are at the end of the lunar cycle anyway — time to wrap up initiatives begun at the New Moon and think about your agenda for the New Moon on Sunday at 2:20 AM ET.
About this storm — will it really be monstrous? Well, let’s see…we have a majority of planets in Air and Water signs; plus expansive Jupiter (in airy Gemini) is challenging energetic Mars, mental Mercury and nebulous Neptune (all in watery Pisces). That sounds like a big, wet, windy mess to me. Enjoy!

Gee, it’s fun to type in color, especially on a void-of-course Moon in Sagittarius. Adds a twist to the usual routine, and that’s what folks in the U.S. may experience until 12:55PM ET, especially with other planetary patterns that continue to favor the weird, wacky and wonderful. Go with the flow this morning and note your dreams, as Mercury (mindset) and nebulous Neptune are hooking up in intuitive Pisces. Paying attention to your intuition is not a bad strategy today — and over the next few weeks, as the logical mind is more easily confused. You’ll have plenty of time to practice tuning in, especially when Mercury goes retrograde in Pisces on February 23rd.
This concentration of sensitive, emotional Pisces energy softens the usually hard, driving edge of the Moon’s when it enters Capricorn at 12:55PM. On the one hand, perhaps Capricorn’s usual need to make things happen won’t seem so urgent. On the other hand, everyone may be feeling so groovy that they just decide to cooperate for the sake of an agenda that is a win-win-win.
Innovative and unconventional tastes in the arts, finances and social interactions are also highlighted, as Venus and rebel Uranus are in an especially easy connection, too. Pitch your wildest ideas, and you may find them received with great enthusiasm. As the day draws to a close, some disruption of the status quo may hit the headlines — as the structures required by the Capricorn Moon are challenged by Uranus in recalcitrant Aries at 10:37PM ET. And now, the news. “Twisted logic” is what the editors of the New York Times called a white paper crafted by the Department of Justice explaining why it was OK to kill an American citizen without due process. Does that make this picture of President Obama allegedly skeet shooting at Camp David (released Friday, with nebulous Neptune still strong) seem even weirder? Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s horoscope is affected by the Mercury-Mars-Neptune pile-up in Pisces, as all three planets are on the cusp of his 7th house, which refers to partnerships and open enemies. Really, it is no surprise that yesterday Mr. Trump declared war — on Bill Maher, whom he is suing for $5 million (something about an orangutan). Other Neptunian themes of note in the news: more fraud (too many stories to mention); sky-high prices paid for art and water, water everywhere — especially ocean water, as a tsunami hits the Solomon Islands…
Another day driven by a righteous Moon in Sagittarius, expressing big ideas wherever it goes, fueled by a humanitarian Aquarius Sun. Patterns are light today…but you may still need a grounding cord, lest your rose-colored views carry you off like a helium balloon (cue The Fifth Dimension singing the classic Jimmy Webb song, now).

We’ve got one planetary shift today. Mercury, which refers to mindset, travel and communication, enters dreamy Pisces at 9:58AM ET and heads for a rendez-vous with nebulous Neptune, which is exact tomorrow. This adds to the wiggy surreal potential we’ve been experiencing with aggressive Mars hooked up with the bedazzling power of Neptune. Regular readers know that Neptune connections are wonderful for intangibles: spirit, music, art, healing and other divine inspirations. Neptune also refers to deception, oil, escape, scandal and drugs — to name a few. If you’re a creative type, a lover or a healer, you could soar. If you’re an escapist, we may have to send out a search party by the end of the month.
Moon goes void at 3:42PM ET, not to enter Capricorn until Wednesday at 12:55PM ET. Get it off your desk before 4PM if you can — and take some time to dream and wander. Earthy practicality will demand your attention tomorrow — still divinely inspired.
And now the news, brought to you by juicy Mars-Neptune in Pisces, karma-busting Saturn in Scorpio and the never-ending Uranus square Pluto, disruptor of the status quo, exposing what lies beneath. Finally, we’re seeing fraud (Neptune) charges about to be filed against a credit-ratings agency for its helium-induced assessments that helped bring about the fiscal crisis of 2008. Ya think? “Fraud” is in the headline of the latest from economist Paul Krugman — incredibly not about credit-ratings agencies. Meanwhile, remember the potential delusions of a fanatic I mentioned in Sunday’s forecast? The kidnapping of a young boy in Alabama has been resolved and the man who abducted him is dead (the boy was rescued — hooray).
Here’s a story about fraud (Neptune) in sports (Mars), specifically soccer. Muzak (Neptune refers to music) is also on the front page. Can you believe it? Neptune refers to illusions like TV (there’s no actual football team playing inside your set), and it is no surprise that a charismatic hook-up with Mars accompanied the sky-high ratings for that surreal Super Bowl— also on the front page. But my favorite surreal story of the day is the news from across the Pond that the skeleton of King Richard III was positively identified. The bones were first uncovered in August — under a car park — on a “news from underground” connection among Uranus, Pluto and Venus. East Coasters, your work week may begin with a slow start or some other twist in your morning routine, given the brief void-of-course Moon between 7:31AM and 10:45AM ET. If ever there was a day to pour cold water on your coffee grounds or forget to even grind the beans before putting them in the French press, this is it. As you know from reading yesterday’s forecast, thanks to a beguiling Mars-Neptune hook-up, there is a ton of wigged-out energy to either thoroughly confuse you or take you to the highest of bedazzling heights. How about that wigged-out 35-minute power outage during last night’s Super Bowl? And frankly, the whole month of February suggests more of same, even with Mercury turning retrograde on the 23rd and Saturn turning retrograde on the 18th. It will be interesting to see if the optimism/idealism/soaring spiritualism is reflected in the markets over the next few weeks.

At 10:45AM ET, Moon enters Sagittarius, another high-flying placement with opinions to shout from the rooftops. Just make sure you’ve got yourself tethered by a safety harness, especially from lunchtime to teatime. There’s the potential to engage in a heated discussion that is based on the surreal, not the real. Could be a scenario for “open mouth, insert foot” — and we want to make sure it’s someone else doing that, not you. Still more boisterous indulgence carries us into the evening hours — courtesy of expansive Jupiter hitting that big-thinking Sagittarius Moon. Broaden your horizons and go for a gambol.
Pop quiz for regular readers of this forecast, especially those who live in New York. Does anything in the above paragraph remind you of Ed Koch, the former New York mayor who passed away a few days ago? Like “opinionated” or “expansive”…as in “Sagittarius” and “Jupiter”, respectively? If you said yes, good for you. Ed Koch has Sun in Sagittarius conjunct Jupiter! In other words, that opinionated energy needs to be expressed expansively. And this conjunction is challenged by aggressive Mars and rebel Uranus — quite explosive and/or provocative. But wait, there’s more: his Moon is in Cancer, suggesting a need to provide emotional/homeland security — and this, too, is in contact with expansive Jupiter. A caring father figure who was larger than life ? We also see Mercury (mindset) in super-practical Capricorn, and it is challenged by ruthless Pluto. Here was a man who would not suffer fools gladly — or you’d hear about it in a New York minute. Also of interest: a Libra Ascendant suggesting a need to be seen as a people-pleaser (“how am I doin’?”) and yet most of the time he was seen…alone. Why could that be? Well, Mayor Koch’s horoscope has a Grand Trine, which some astrologers see as a lucky configuration. But I have learned in recent years that Grand Trines operate as defense mechanisms — against relationship. Sure, they may allow people to act as if they are “a law unto themselves” — but why is that lucky? Mr. Koch never married…but readers of his obituary in the New York Times have posted numerous anecdotes as a tribute. RIP, Mayor Koch.
