Astro-logical Forecast for Wednesday 3/20/2013: Happy Vernal Equinox!

Happy Vernal Equinox! Happy first day of Spring! Happy International Astrology Day! As of 7:02AM ET, Sun entered Aries, marking the beginning of a new astrological year. Courage, self-reliance, inspiration and a pioneering spirit are keywords for the Sun in Aries, sign of the ram — and the lamb.  In the Northern hemisphere (the birthplace of Western astrology), it is a time of renewal and rebirth — a chance to let go of old patterns and make a fresh start.

More on the equinox, but first let’s talk about the rest of this day, which is driven by the Moon in Cancer. This is a happy place for the Moon (it rules Cancer), as it seeks to express or find emotional security and sensitivity. The energy it provides is quite challenged today, however, which you may have noticed the minute you got out of bed. A provocative square between the sensitive Moon and willful Mars dominated the wee hours, followed by another square from rebel Uranus, the cosmic cattle prod. Electric!

This afternoon, stern Saturn seeks to stabilize all the buzz flying around, but at 2:01PM, potent Pluto opposes the Moon, suggesting an emotional catharsis or a power play. And on that note, the Moon goes void-of-course for a lonnnnnnnnnng drift, not to enter Leo (the next sign) until 2:50AM on FRIDAY. Regular readers of this forecast know that Moon voids are natural rest/brainstorming periods where creative endeavors can take odd, sometimes magical, twists. Moving forward purposefully in a straight line is often challenged by sudden detours, flakes and cancellations. Crises that crop up tend to be much ado about nothing — but that may not stop people from behaving as if the house is on fire. Roll with the twists and go with the flow and double check everything if you absolutely must hit “send”. I find that voids can feel like mini Mercury retrogrades, accompanied by communication snafus and lack of mental focus. I say this because I can’t tell you how many times someone will ask me if Mercury is retrograde when in fact the Moon is void of course. If you are free to wander, you can accomplish a lot.

OK, about the vernal equinox. Here’s what you need to know about the first day of any season from an astrological point of view. The first day of each season (Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter) corresponds with the first day (or first DEGREE) of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, respectively. Got that? Good. These four signs are called CARDINAL signs of the zodiac, with “cardinal” here suggesting (from the Latin root of the word), “that on which something turns or depends.”  Cardinal signs take ACTION. They INITIATE. Nothing happens without ACTION. And action leads to  NECESSARY CHANGE. As in a change of seasons — suggested by solstices and equinoxes. Clear?

The first day of a  season is prominent in our culture, right? We make a big deal over it — yes? So can you see that in astrology, we observe that PLANETS that are at the first degree of a cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra & Capricorn), tend to pack a more powerful, prominent punch. They suggest ACTION which leads to CHANGE — prominently! The first degree of the cardinal signs is known as the ARIES POINT. Got that?

Mars was at the Aries Point last week, bringing pioneering initiatives and aggression to the forefront. Now we have Sun at the AP. Late tomorrow night, Venus will be at the Aries Point, too, bringing relationship issues (as I wrote last week), and also issues involving money, art and women to the top of your inbox. If you have a planet or angle at the Aries Point, you can expect that the energy of that planet will demand prominent expression in your life. Your friends and family — and perhaps the entire free world — will notice it. William Shatner was born with the Sun at 0 Aries. “To boldly go where no man has gone before”? I should think so — and the whole world knows him for playing that role.

Lots of news to cover — and since we will have a day with no exact planetary patterns tomorrow, I will devote that forecast to the headlines….stay tuned….

Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 11/21/11: Revolution Earth

No exact aspects today except for a potentially potent & cathartic challenge between Moon in fair-minded, peace-loving Libra and ruthless Pluto at 6:04AM ET. A cranky encounter with a moody woman? A spat over resources and other possessions? Perhaps nothing at all, because you’re not even awake at 6:04AM ET for gawdsake?  Aspects from Moon move fast — blink and you might miss ’em.

Yesterday’s exact square between nebulous Neptune and Sun was reflected in many headlines. Neptune refers to oil, water and toxins. Here’s a must-read piece about all three in the New York Times Magazine http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/magazine/fracking-amwell-township.html?src=recg Neptune also refers to spaciness and fantasy, delightfully illustrated in this bit from The Onion http://www.theonion.com/articles/you-look-like-you-could-use-an-elizabethan-adventu,10881/ Of course pepper spray is also a toxin, and if you haven’t been keeping up on the story of the alleged police officer nonchalantly blasting students at UC/Davis and sending at least one to a nearby hospital, have a look http://www.salon.com/2011/11/20/the_roots_of_the_uc_davis_pepper_spraying/ The toxic incident has since been turned into fine art, also represented by Neptune http://peppersprayingcop.tumblr.com/  In other news, the word “fantasy” was featured in this piece on the Super Committee http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/fantasies-of-a-debt-deal-from-a-convivial-congress/?hp Coincidence or conspiracy?

Meanwhile, social unrest in Egypt is again in the news. Regular readers of this forecast will recall that revolution in Egypt was making news some months ago, about the time that rebel Uranus, disruptor of the status quo, was approaching zero degrees of Aries. Zero Aries is the degree of the Vernal Equinox, the first day of Spring (think it’s a coincidence they’re calling the unrest in Arab countries the “Arab Spring”)?   A planet near zero degrees of Aries tends to call attention to itself — big time. And right now Uranus is approaching that zero degree again, as it moves backward through the sign of Aries. Uranus turns direct on December 10th, so we may well see more big news of  social unrest/rebellion around that date — in Egypt and elsewhere, too. Here’s an example of unrest in Wisconsin, in which over 25,000 people gathered over the weekend to support a petition to recall Governor Scott Walker, suggesting difficulties that were anticipated for Gov. Walker around the early part of 2012 may well come to pass http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/feingold-signs-walker-recall-petition-to-kick-off-madison-rally-pu34cfr-134174313.html Revolution Earth? Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 3/21/2011: Uranus Conjunct Sun in Aries

Re-read the Friday forecast for thoughts on the shake-ups suggested by today’s meeting between Sun and rebel Uranus at the very beginning of the zodiac. Shake-ups can be positive, as in shaking out cobwebs from our minds and/or getting us out of a rut.  Wherever zero degrees of Aries falls in your horoscope is likely the area of your life in which you might be experiencing shake-ups — or seeking liberation. Consult your local astrologer for details.

It’s another work week of full-speed ahead. Mars, planet of action, aggression (and war!), continues to run wild today. Channel your enthusiasm productively and the sky’s the limit.  We’ve got a brief Moon void from 2:35 – 3:17 PM EDT, after which the Moon leaves cerebral Libra for moody Scorpio, a sign which demands substance, not theory. That freedom you’re seeking? Deep down, you know what you have to do…

Courage, self-reliance, inspiration and a pioneering spirit are keywords for the beginning of the astrological new year, the time when the Sun is in Aries, sign of the ram — and the lamb.  In the Northern hemisphere (the birthplace of Western astrology), it is a time of renewal and rebirth — a chance to let go of old patterns and make a fresh start.  Happy Monday!

Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 12/20/2010: The Aries Point

Fresh off an idealistic mindset suggested by last night’s connection between mental Mercury and the Sun in Sagittarius, what flashes of genius that may disrupt the status-quo will you have — or see in the headlines today? Or will your mind be merely racing, unable to focus as a result of information overload from today’s Moon in “need to know” Gemini? Communication and travel may be a bit jarring today; embrace whatever unconventional detours you encounter (it’s more productive than losing your temper).

We are building energy for a Full Moon/total lunar eclipse, exact on the East Coast at 3:13AM Tuesday, which just happens to be the Winter Solstice. We haven’t had a total lunar eclipse on shortest day of the year in over 400 years, so clearly it’s the end of the world. NOT. Let’s see what really might be going on.

Eclipses interrupt the regular flow of light and whatever other energy flows from the Sun or the Moon, like a river meeting a dam. This creates a bottleneck of energy — and in the case of a lunar eclipse, emotion — that must eventually find a release, usually over the course of a few months’ time. In the case of this eclipse, the time frame is five and half months. Eclipses often highlight an area of life where something needs to be brought to a close. Wherever the eclipse falls in your horoscope is where you can expect a bottleneck, followed by a release, likely of an emotional nature. The bottleneck is an opportunity to gather your resources and/or forces before the release. Since the normal flow is disrupted, the opportunity is ripe for changing the flow. That can be a very good thing! So look for 29 Gemini/29 Sagittarius in your chart and take note of the house which contains it. Or consult your local astrologer for insight.

This eclipse is the first of a series occurring over the next few years in the signs of Gemini/Sagittarius; a shift from two years of bottlenecks and releases in the signs of Cancer/Capricorn (the last in this series of Cancer/Capricorn eclipses happens Jan 4th). We are shifting from letting go of old patterns and beliefs on emotional and homeland security, hallowed institutions and corporations, how we administer progress — all these and other Cancer/Capricorn concerns. Globally the focus is likely to shift to letting go of old patterns in Gemini/Sagittarius issues: communication, mindsets, “big picture” thinking (law, religion. education), foreign relations, information (and information control). Again, how this release will likely manifest specifically in YOUR life requires a look at your unique horoscope.

Does the fact that the total eclipse is happening on the solstice make it more significant?  Sure. Any planet positioned on an equinox or solstice carries more weight — and especially carries with it a drive for prominence. Equinoxes and solstices happen at  zero degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn (collectively known as the Aries Point). That’s what much of the fuss was about regarding the Big T-Square Party among Pluto, Uranus and Saturn that dominated 2010; these planets were all at the Aries Point, indicating the necessity for CHANGE (read my forecast for 7/27/2010 for notes on the Big T-Square Party). To quote Alex Forrest (played by Glenn Close) in the movie FATAL ATTRACTION: “I’m not going to be IGNORED, Dan.” That’s the potential of a planet on the Aries Point in action. And yes, such planets can find more positive and constructive ways to get attention than boiling bunny rabbits ; )

I’ll write more about the eclipse in tomorrow’s forecast — and if we’re lucky, I’ll post it before 3:13AM. Meanwhile, be kind and patient — know that emotions ARE especially likely to be intense and in our faces right now…and if you or anyone you know is born on or near a solstice or an equinox, be ESPECIALLY kind to them, as they will likely be feeling this more intensely than others.  This eclipse will be visible in all of the US — night owls, rejoice!
