Happy Monday!
After a 12-hour void, the Moon shifted into gear in Scorpio at 9:10AM ET. East Coasters, if you lingered in bed — perhaps trying to recapture that hour of sleep you lost yesterday thanks to Daylight Savings Time — you likely got away with it.
A Scorpio Moon suggests a need for depth, substance and control. Fluffy it ain’t, especially with action hero Mars pulling focus all week (see Friday’s forecast for details). Forge ahead on those weighty matters. Understand that others may have their own heavy agenda, too. It’s not all about you, even with Mars, Venus and Uranus in me-me-me Aries, challenging efforts to prove otherwise. Self-assertive acts bordering on rebellion may pull focus.
Your push for advancement may be especially aided and abetted if you have a planet or angle around 15 degrees of just about every sign — but especially Cancer, Libra, Capricorn…and super-especially for Aries. Dear readers, your horoscope is much more complex than your Sun Sign. This is why I do not write daily forecasts for each sign; I believe it does everyone a disservice. Say you’re a Scorpio with a 14 degree Libra Ascendant and Moon at 15 Aries. Your life might be on fire right about now — for better or for worse — and no general forecast for Scorpio would give you the faintest clue as to why. Get to know your whole horoscope — or hire a trained professional to explain it to you in plain English. It will serve you for life.
But I digress. The energy boost and buzz this week comes courtesy of Mars, as it aligns (tomorrow) with expansive Jupiter. Then it is supercharged by rebel Uranus and potent Pluto on Wednesday. Other patterns of significance include mental Mercury leaving Aquarius for Pisces on Thursday, and Saturn turning retrograde on Saturday until early August.More on that later this week.
The 800 pound gorilla in the room is the buzz of the seventh Uranus-Pluto square, exact next Monday at 9:50PM ET. Will the world end? No, but pay close attention to the headlines this week, because those are the issues to be faced and dealt with for the rest of this decade and beyond. Is it a coincidence that Naomi Klein’s new book, This Changes Everything is being excerpted now by The Guardian? Heck no, and if you’re an avid reader of this forecast, you’ll remember that on the fifth exact Uranus-Pluto square last April, the Big News was a huge shift in awareness that climate change was real. That, and a Princeton study concluding that the United States was no longer a democracy, but an oligarchy.
Unlike the past two weeks, there aren’t many Moon voids to detour your efforts to move forward in a straight line. Moon will be void Wednesday from 3:46PM until 7:30PM ET…and then on Friday from 7:11PM ET until 2:40AM on Saturday. That’s it. So get to work — with depth, intensity and substance.
And now, the news.
With Mars pulling focus, we’d anticipate more than the usual headlines about aggression, e.g., “UN Report Cites Alarming Level of Attacks Against Women“; or, “Who Spewed That Abuse? Anonymous Yik Yak Isn’t Telling“. Yik Yak is a free app that is popular among students. At its worst, it’s like a slam book on steroids. Like we need another slam book in cyberspace.
Meanwhile, the Uranus-Pluto square, as I have noted before, presents us with an opportunity to advance initiatives that were started at the beginning of the Uranus-Pluto cycle. That would be the Uranus-Pluto conjunction of 1965-1966. Think of it as equal to a New Moon. The square is like a First Quarter Moon.
Thus it is no coincidence that matters of civil rights have been demanding attention during the past few years. Over the weekend, tens of thousands of people marched in Selma, Alabama, 50 years after 600 civil rights activists attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery to raise awareness of voting rights inequality. They were stopped, tear-gassed and beaten by Alabama police. The brutality was televised. Awareness was raised. In August of 1965, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. How are we doing now?
When Uranus and Pluto make contact, the status quo is disrupted. Consider gender equality, another hotbed issue in the 1960s. I find it fascinating to see how that cause has been re-ignited and re-defined. The issue is now not just one of women’s rights; it’s about rights for transgendered people, too…and rights and recognition for people whose gender identity might even be “none of the above”.
Two final stories. The first reflects a pioneering Venus in Aries, combined with Mars challenging technogeek Uranus (also in Aries) and Pluto (power, transformation). The Facebook page “I F***ing Love Science” posted tributes to sixteen pioneering women scientists — for International Women’s Day. These women deserve to be known.
Second, a follow-up to an article I linked here last week from the NYT about “things we can’t explain” — you know, “woo-woo stuff” that is rarely discussed in Serious News Publications. You may have heard that over the weekend, a toddler in Utah was rescued from a car that had plunged into a river. It is believed she was trapped for up to 14 hours. Her mother did not survive. A story published in the Deseret News (“the first news organization and the longest continuously-operating business in the state of Utah — owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”), reports that the four police officers who rescued the child say they heard a voice crying for help. But when they finally found her, she was unconscious. Where did that voice come from? The Guardian makes no mention of the voice. Raw Story picked it up, though. Haven’t read other versions yet.
Cue “Twilight Zone” music now, please….

Ready for a break? The high-flying Sagittarius Moon goes void-of course with a long sigh at 6:36AM ET, not to enter the next sign — Capricorn — until 1:01PM ET on Tuesday. Trying to move forward in a straight line during Moon voids can feel like you’re herding an infinite number of cats. Go with the flow of whatever twists and delays crops up, and remember that crises — including panic attacks — that manifest are often much ado about nothing. Example: in my other life in TV news, I can’t tell you how many times a “urgent” deadline has suddenly pulled focus in a Moon void and then turned into a big “NEVER MIND” once the Moon got back into gear. So if you feel under the gun over the next two days, please maintain perspective and chill, chill chill!
Given that we are the end of the lunar cycle, the wandering potential of the Moon void may be especially augmented by the listlessness or restlessness often felt in the dark side of the Moon. We sense the new cycle is coming, but we don’t know what it is. Clear your desk of projects started at the New Moon, and also consider letting go of these 20 things in preparation for the powerful New Moon in Capricorn that’s happening Wednesday at 6:14AM ET. We are starting the New Year off with a bang!
Today’s Moon void should take some of the potentially forceful edge off the the potent challenge between aggressive Mars and ruthless Pluto (exact at 8:16PM ET), though I still expect to see some notable acts of violence (downside) and/or extraordinarily energetic efforts (upside) making headlines. Same goes for the intensely perspicacious hook-up between mental Mercury and Pluto happening Tuesday at 6:24AM ET, as well as the clash of will and mindset suggested by a challenge between Mercury and Mars a few hours later. Communications may be exceptionally persuasive and/or forceful — especially with Venus (social decorum) in full-blown retrograde mode through the end of January (interesting to see this op-ed piece on political bullies in Sunday NYT).
If you were born around the 1st of January, April, July and October…or if you have a planet or angle around 8-11 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, you are more likely to feel the pressure to “make it or break it” continuing on for the next few days….for better or for worse; the choice is up to you.
At 1:01PM ET on Tuesday, Moon enters “make it happen” Capricorn, infusing the day with an earthy practicality. A soft connection between the Moon and rose-colored Neptune offers a dreamy spin to the “Auld Lang Syne” you’ll be singing at midnight. Do be careful around the fireworks, as the Capricorn Moon makes contact with the never-ending Uranus-Pluto square in the wee hours of the first day of 2014. Did I mention that the New Year might start off with a bang?

As reported on Friday, the perfection-seeking Virgo Moon will be void-of-course as of 2:02AM ET on Monday, not to enter Libra until 3:25AM ET on Tuesday.Take care of what is routine, chill, meditate, cogitate — but refrain from shipping if you can. Roll with whatever twists may disrupt your efforts to move forward in a straight line; exercise patience even though it may feel like the day is not in gear. And note the voids for the rest of the week: Wednesday 8:12AM ET until Thursday 6:25AM ET; Friday 4:56AM ET until Saturday at 7:32AM ET. Apparently the cosmos thinks we all need these long breaks after last week’s intensity — and certainly we may need one after Thursday’s Full Moon/Eclipse in moody bastard Scorpio. Well, I did say the shift of planets from fiery Aries to earthy Taurus would likely slow things down.
That being said, there are a few lovely aspects this week to facilitate creative inspiration, soulful healing and music to soothe the savage breast, courtesy of a communicative connection between mental Mercury and jolly Jupiter on Tuesday, as well as two hits to the Taurus Sun and Mars (also in Taurus) from rose-colored Neptune on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. More on those as the week progresses. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of news to discuss…
First, a number of stories reflecting ruthless power plays involving information, suggested by Sunday’s square between mental Mercury and potent Pluto. The Koch brothers are allegedly exploring the acquisition of eight regional newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old grad student shakes the “intellectual foundation of the global austerity movement” when he discovers the data used by said proponents is, um…like…faulty. Even so, in Denmark, the Danes are now rethinking “a welfare state that is ample to a fault”. Yet the number of people living in near poverty in New York City now appears to be 46%. Maybe we should house them all in residential internet cafes like the ones in Tokyo.
You may recall that last week’s volatile hook-up between Sun and Mars in Aries was likely to have a strong impact on anyone with a planet around 27 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. It should come as no surprise to learn that two brothers who wreaked such havoc on Boston fall into this category. The older brother (deceased) was reportedly born on October 21, 1986 — Sun at 27 Libra; the young brother (arrested, alive) was born on July 22, 1993 — Sun at 29 Cancer. As you might imagine, the planetary patterns on both dates were rather complicated.
In the case of the older brother, an immediate red flag is suggested by an idealistic conjunction of Mercury and Venus in Scorpio. So there’s a need here for mindset and social expression that needs power and control, along with depth and substance. Scorpio is a particularly challenging placement for Venus, and an emotional short-circuit is further suggested by Venus being retrograde. This is the brother who said he had no American friends because he didn’t “understand Americans”. Not understanding something or someone had to be difficult for a man apparently born with Moon in Gemini, which needs to be informed, intense and clever.
Another red flag for potential violence: aggressive Mars in “rebel with a cause” Aquarius, challenged by ruthless Pluto in Scorpio This young man was an accomplished boxer, which would be a more positive channel for Mars-Pluto energy. Transiting Saturn is currently in contact with that forceful Mars-Pluto aspect; this is a transit that can be very tough to manage. Adding to the potential for anti-social or loner behavior is a probable T-square involving stern Saturn opposing the restless Moon in Gemini and squaring a sometimes bombastic Jupiter. Also tough to manage in this chart: the Libra Sun, righteous Jupiter, rebel Uranus, visionary/fanatic Neptune all apparently running wild, demanding attention as separate needs in the persona — and not integrated with anything else. The horoscope for this brother’s death at 1:35AM on April 19th in Cambridge, MA is shows a power-packed 3rd house (the younger brother apparently ran him over); stern Saturn and ruthless Pluto are on the angles of the chart.
And what of the surviving brother? The Virgo Moon needs perfection. He’s also an idealist, with mental Mercury retrograde and opposed by a tight Uranus-Neptune conjunction. The Uranus factor suggests innovative thinking (this brother won a scholarship); the Neptune factor suggests a need for a dream, a vision, an escape (he is known among his friends as a “pothead’). This chart also has a number of planets running wild, reinforcing a sense of not fitting in. One is Saturn, which was under a foggy influence by transiting Neptune during 2011 and part of 2012; another is expansive Jupiter at 8 Libra, which was hit by the Uranus-Pluto square last year and this year, too. Such a shame, as the potential for positive accomplishment in life-affirming persona is so great. This transit often suggests a windfall or other lucky break, and perhaps it is lucky for him that he was not killed. If you know anything about midpoints, run a chart for this date and check them out.
