Tuesday 8/28/2018: Late Sneak Peek at the Week; John McCain RIP

The Pisces Moon is void this morning between 9:54 AM ET and 12:35 PM ET. See if you notice how the energy shifts this afternoon — from a need for empathy and ideals to the Aries Moon’s need for me-me-me  — not now, but RIGHT NOW. Its action-oriented drive may be tempered by a authoritarian challenge around 5:37 PM ET, when the Moon is squared by Saturn. On WEDNESDAY, the need for initiative charges ahead without interference.

THURSDAY offers a few pushes and shoves, as the Moon squares Pluto at 12:53 AM ET (power play/catharsis time), with more to come around 7 PM ET, as the Aries Moon opposes Venus in Libra (“me” vs. “we”) and squares Mars in Capricorn (“just get it done!”). Chill during a two and a half hour Moon void. Moon enters Taurus at 9:30 PM ET, seeking material comfort and security. That need may be disrupted around 1:50 AM ET on FRIDAY, as the Moon makes its weekly hard aspect to Uranus.

Other than today’s last of three squares between Mercury (mindset, communication) and Jupiter (big!!) at 1:31 AM ET, there are no other exact aspects among the planets, except to the Moon. Anything goes! But please go slowly, as Mars (action, assertion, aggression) has only just turned direct (yesterday at 10:05 AM ET).

Avid Readers may enjoy a Labor Day weekend relatively free from planetary challenges, brought to you mostly by the pleasure-seeking Taurus Moon on Friday and Saturday. On SUNDAY, Moon enters information junkie Gemini at 4:02 AM ET,  and will be close to a meet-up with Barack Obama’s Gemini Moon as he eulogizes Senator John McCain. Sweetness and cooperation in communication and social expression is likely to be noticeable as we get closer to the weekend and MONDAY’s harmony between Mercury and Venus, exact at 8:38 AM ET. George W. Bush — who has also been asked to deliver a eulogy — will benefit from the suggested social grace and rose-colored vision.

And now, the news.

“Reaching across the aisle” is one potential of the weekend’s alignment among Sun, Saturn (old guard) and Uranus (avant garde). And this is how some are remembering John McCain, as in this clip from NBC News: “John McCain’s Legacy of Reaching Across the Aisle.”   In a letter to America, dictated before he died, McCain encourages us to appreciate what we have in common and place those unifying bonds above all else.

Here is John McCain’s horoscope:  perfectionist Virgo Sun driven by a humanitarian/maverick-y Moon in Aquarius. Needs to be seen as empathetic and visionary, suggested by a Pisces Ascendant. Saturn in Pisces is in an obsessive relationship with that Virgo Sun, suggesting a need for obsessive-compulsion in matters of authority, discipline, obligation. Astrologer Michael Lutin once said that Saturn in Pisces needs to turn suffering into an art form. And this is interesting because Saturn in Pisces is right there in the First House — so clearly part of the image he needs to present to the world. Most people know that John McCain survived five years of torture as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He wrote about that experience in the early ’70s, here.  I thought about the planetary patterns he would have had during that anguished period. Probably a conjunction, square or opposition from Pluto to his natal Saturn. And in fact, that’s what he had.

Contrary to the obsessive discipline of his Sun-Saturn relationship, his Aquarius Moon is challenged by rebel Uranus and opposed by intensely potent Pluto. That T-square suggests a need for freedom and for deep dramatic expression. Add more drama courtesy of a regally entitled Mars in Leo (that can get away with murder), in harmony with a boundary-pushing Jupiter in Sagittarius. This Mars-Jupiter alignment suggests strong potential for vitality, with Mars placed in the 6th house of health and “the body politic.” Toss in a bit of streamlined conservatism, suggested by an opposition between Saturn and Venus in hypercritical Virgo.

His T-square among Moon, Uranus and Pluto has been hit more than once by this summer’s Mars-Uranus square. Last week, transiting Mars stationed opposite McCain’s Pluto, suggesting empowering effort in matters of values and self-worth, heard around the world. His final “letter to America” linked above would be one manifestation. As for his visionary/mythic projection, his Venus at 23 Virgo is square to Chiron (the wounded healer) at 22 Gemini. It sits right on top of the Mars-Neptune square in the U.S. horoscope. So his values and social expression are going to grok with the U.S. romance with cowboys and guns. It’s amazing how many who hold powerful government positions in this country have planets in their horoscopes that are connected to that pattern in our national horoscope.

Anyhoo…

Regarding the maple trees. My plea to my friend on the co-op board made an impact. The next day, as I was in full-blown community organizer mode, I received a text that the planned tree removal had been put on hold — to be “revisited.” I was thrilled that the trees had earned at least a temporary reprieve, but did not feel for a minute that my work was done. And it wasn’t. Stay tuned, and I’ll tell you what happened next.

Meanwhile, astrologer Bill Herbst has been on a roll this summer, churning out essay after essay in his own brand of brilliance. Avid Readers may recall that I credit Bill for igniting my passion for mundane astrology — i.e., the study of planetary cycles and how they are reflected in world events. Who turned me on to Bill? Rockie Gardiner, who used to write her Rockie Horoscope for LA Weekly. When Rockie passed away in 2008, I missed her forecast terribly — which prompted me to start writing what you’re reading now.

In other news, last Friday (when the Moon was in Aquarius and the Sun in harmony with Saturn and Uranus), I went to see Maison du Bonheur, a documentary about Parisian astrologer Juliane Sellam. The filmmaker was also there for a post-screening Q & A, and I can’t tell you how refreshing it was to hear her speak about her subject (Mme. Sellam) in glowing terms, praising her brilliance and generous spirit. It goes against the mainstream stereotype of astrologers as “woo-woo,” etc. That’s Mme. Sellam, pictured below.

Thank you for reading this forecast.

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday 1/7/2014: Breakthrough Potential

Brrrr! It’s five degrees in New York. Even my keyboard froze up last night. Extreme? Score another round for planetary patterns….

My money is on a non-stop day of action, especially for those with planets engaged with the Cardinal Grand Cross discussed in yesterday’s forecast. The Moon continues to charge through Aries, zapped by an Uranian lightning bolt at 6:20AM ET; engaged in a power play or emotional catharsis with Pluto at 11:13AM ET and challenged by willful Mars and expansive/expensive Jupiter just in time for Happy Hour. By the end of the day, you should know what needs to be done to move your New Moon agenda forward, suggested by the First Quarter Moon’s conflict between me-me-me Aries and the (Sun in) Capricorn Establishment.

There may be some idealism involving said Establishment, or at least in areas of status and society, suggested by hook-up between mental Mercury and Venus (social expression, women, art, money) in practical Capricorn, and plenty may be revealed. After writing all the above last night, I am delighted to see on the NYT home page an item in which five activists who broke into a FBI office in 1971  are now breaking their silence.

They were never caught, and the stolen documents that they mailed anonymously to newspaper reporters were the first trickle of what would become a flood of revelations about extensive spying and dirty-tricks operations by the F.B.I. against dissident groups.

Gosh, this sounds familiar. Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden, anyone? Could there be an astrological pattern repeating itself? The activists who are the subject of these new revelations were a product of the 1960s, also known as the revolutionary Uranus-Pluto conjunctions of 1965 and 1966. Interesting to note that things really got wild in the aftermath of the exact Uranus-Pluto conjunctions, i.e., up until 1972. Astrologer Bill Herbst has opined that we can expect a similarly increased level of disruption in the years following the seven exact squares between Uranus and Pluto happening between 2011 and 2015.  Wow!

Meanwhile, more news in the power and energy sector, as forecast. Toyota plans to put a hydrogen-powered car on the market in 2015 and last year,  Spain’s greenhouse emissions dropped 23%, thanks to increased usage of electricity generated by wind and hydropower. Why can’t we do that here?

More news from Spain, involving power and corruption in high places: a member of the royal family faces charges of money laundering and tax fraud. Yikes! Meanwhile, in New York, 80 police officers and firefighters were arrested on charges filing fraudulent disability claims — in a several hundred million dollar operation that dates back to 1988 — and possibly even earlier. Wow again! Oh, and JP Morgan Chase will be paying out billions of dollars again, this time to settle charges that it enabled Bernie Madoff’s ongoing Ponzi scheme.

Aries, which is where the Moon is today, rules the head. Thus I leave you with two groundbreaking stories: one about mapping the brain and the other about measuring consciousness. As Rene Descartes famously said, “I think; therefore, I am.” Yes, of course, Rene Descartes was an Aries — with a truckload of other Aries planets in the 3rd house, which refers to mindset and communication. Interesting to note that his Aries Sun is at 10 degrees and his Ascendant is 10 degrees Capricorn — both currently supercharged by the Cardinal Grand Cross. Mais oui, Rene, we are thinking of you aujourd’hui…bodies may pass away, but horoscopes live forever….

This fire-engine red is brought to you by the Moon in me-me-me Aries, inspiring you to start the New Year off with an astro-logical consultation that’s all about YOU. Here’s how to contact me.

If you must ship in the next 48 hours, ship it today or before 11:22AM ET on Wednesday, when the Moon goes void for a 10 hour spell.

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday 10/29/2013: The Planetary Pattern Everyone Should Be Talking About

OK, break time is over — as in —  yesterday’s long Moon void is behind us. As of 11:45PM ET last night, Moon entered discriminating Virgo, seeking to fulfill its need for critical thinking and perfection. And this is a need that’s quite well-supported by the rest of the planets throughout the next couple of days. Add in the serious focus of today’s exact conjunction of mental Mercury and stern Saturn in ruthless, penetrating Scorpio, and you’ve got a lovely set-up for some productive purging of thought forms that no longer serve, in light of potentially super-heavy facts that should no longer be avoided. Rethink, review, reform your ideas and ambitions — with a practical focus. Whatever is on your plate now — that was also on your plate around October 9th — should be back for another look or resolution around November 26th, when Mercury and Saturn will conjoin again.

Whereas the Mercury-Saturn hook-up on October 8th was co-mingled with an idealistic, beauty-seeking alignment between Venus and Neptune, this current hook-up is supported by an extremely resourceful and energetic alignment between action hero Mars (also in discriminating, organizing Virgo) and potent Pluto in enterprising Capricorn (exact on Thursday). Way to rally the troops and focus on what is absolutely essential. This Mars-Pluto connection also facilitates physical expression — if it’s all too much for you, hit the gym or connect deeply with a partner. Just don’t hit your partner, please — even though another alignment this week suggests we’ll see still more of the concentrated outbursts of disturbing violence the “if it bleeds, it leads” media folks love to publicize — I don’t need to link this stuff — any newspaper homepage is covered with it, except for this one: the eternally sunny Good News Network.

Meanwhile, that Other Alignment –exact on Friday morning ET —  is the fourth of seven exact squares between rebel Uranus in pioneering, individualistic Aries and “resistance is futile” Pluto in enterprising — and also patriarchal, corporate and institutional — Capricorn. As regular readers know, this looooooong pattern (2011-2016) suggests, as history reflects, upheavals and transformation as peasants revolt, infrastructure breaks down, entities fight to maintain power and control and we see the power of one person to disrupt an entire system (e.g. Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning — off the top of my head). Historically, we’re seeing a repeat of major issues we saw in the mid-60s, as we are given the opportunity to advance that agenda forward (e.g. civil rights, sane and sustainable agriculture, diet and health care; greater understanding of our world via breakthroughs in physics, especially matters of time and space).

We’re also experiencing an echo of the issues we faced in the early 30s, during which we had rebel Uranus in Aries squaring Pluto in homeland security-focused Cancer. Consult your history books for a recap — or check out the website of astrologer Bill Herbst, who has written extensively about the Uranus-Pluto cycle in historical perspective. I got turned on to his site by astrologer Rockie Gardiner over a decade ago; until then I had only worked with the horoscopes of individuals in private consultations. I became determined to understand how planetary patterns can reflect events in the world, too. And now I can’t stop writing about what we’re likely to see in the headlines and why people are making headlines. I’ve been doing this for five years — and I’m telling you — no one makes news unless there are very compelling patterns active in the horoscope.

As noted in prior forecasts, this current Uranus-Pluto square is especially potent because of its relatively long duration. Usually we get three or five hits of a square; this one has SEVEN over the course of 33 months. I appreciate Bill Herbst for pointing out that the last time we had such a long square was between 1496 and 1500 (NINE hits!). Anyone remember what came out of that pattern? How about…The New World?

Your horoscope is currently affected by the Uranus-Pluto square  if you were born 8-12 days into Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn…of if you have a planet or angle at 8-12 degrees of those signs. Believe me, these folks are facing many opportunities for empowerment and emancipation — the high road of Pluto and Uranus transits. As we move into 2014, we’ll see later degrees of those signs activated. Don’t believe me? Ask your Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn friends born in March, June, September and December if they’ve been — or are just wrapping up — major life-changing events.

Oh — and on Sunday, we’ll have another eclipse. This will likely be significant for Taurus, Aquarius, Leo — and especially Scorpios born 11 days into their signs — or anyone who has a planet or point at around 11 degrees of Scorpio. More on that later.

If you don’t know what’s going on in your horoscope, consider making an appointment for a personal consultation. Here’s the 411 on that — and here’s how to contact me.

Thank you for reading — and sharing — this forecast : )

Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 3/18/2013: Sneak Peek At the Week & Other Stuff

No exact aspects among the planets today suggests relative calm before what is certain to be a busy, proactive next two weeks. Some of what we experience is likely to be quite disruptive or exciting, depending upon your point of view. The Moon is still in chatty Gemini, collecting and disseminating information as it may. Those are your marching orders for the start of the week.

Mercury is now officially direct as of 4:03PM ET Sunday — but give yourself a couple of days to adjust to the new forward thinking mode. And be mindful on the road!

Moon voids for the week (natural rest/brainstorming times, if you can swing it):

Tuesday 1:27pm ET – 2:55PM ET;

Wednesday 2:01PM ET until Friday 2:50AM ET;

Friday 11:28PM ET until Sunday 11:49AM ET

I guess we are going to need some down time to process the aforementioned excitement or disruption. First out of the gate is the Sun entering Aries on Wednesday, also known as the Vernal Equinox, first day of Spring and the first day of the astrological new year). On Thursday, Venus also enters Aries, so we should see some prominent relationship news hit the headlines. On Friday, warrior Mars meets up with rebel Uranus, suggesting technological breakthroughs and hopefully no major temper tantrums, accidents or other unpleasant outbursts. Still more excitement will arrive next week — stay tuned to this channel for continuing updates.

And now, the news.  First, thanks to the reader who sent in this important bulletin about a hockey team’s “Salute to Uranus” — a clever promotion for a game played on March 13th, which is the date Uranus was discovered by Sir William Herschel back in 1781:

The planetary ice giant Uranus will be the theme for the evening festivities which will include: trivia, contests, and the King of Uranus himself will be in attendance!

Oh, you fun-loving, adorable cheeseheads. Salute to Uranus…heh, heh, heh. Read the article and let’s invite the Milwaukee Admirals to a “Salute to Mercury Retrograde” — because it has been suggested that the planet pictured in the article is not Uranus. It’s Neptune. Oops. Heh, heh, heh…

Speaking of Uranus (pronounced “ooh –RAH– nuss”), here’s  an article about drones. They have been getting a ton of press in recent months. Why is that in line with planetary patterns? I hadn’t been thinking about it, but one of my colleagues, Dean Bensics, noted in a recent forum that with Uranus (technology & aviation) in Aries (warriors), it makes sense that we would see the rise of robot warriors, given that we have the technology to build them. Indeed. And apparently these drones could mean big business. Sigh.

Meanwhile, have you ever heard of Vatican II? An article with a most provocative headline about Pope Francis describes Vatican II as a period of major (progressive) reform that took place in the early 60s, when revolutionary Uranus and Pluto were conjunct. Who knew? (I did, but had forgotten about it). But of course it makes perfect sense, given current debate about the need for changes in the Catholic Church, etc., etc., and will this new Pope be the one that makes that happen. Astro-logically, we would expect that seeds of revolution that were planted in the 60s on that Uranus-Pluto conjunction are demanding focus and further advancement during current Uranus-Pluto square. We’re seeing this with civil rights; we’re seeing this with environmental issues, reproductive freedom issues, nuclear and other energy issues — hey — don’t forget the Higgs boson — and apparently, we’re seeing this in the Catholic Church. Fascinating! With thanks to astrologer Bill Herbst, who started writing about the Uranus-Pluto square ten years ago. Much of the history of this pattern I learned from studying his observations, so I can now share this wisdom with you.

OK – one more thing — on the lighter side. You know we had the Moon in Taurus on Friday and Saturday. And you know that Taurus needs to maintain stability and material comfort in order to feel secure. Generally speaking, Taurus does not like change! Here is a visual to help you understand Taurus: a Moon in Taurus dream apartment — one that hasn’t changed in 70 years. I’m in love with the wallpaper behind the stuffed ostrich…

What does the Moon in your horoscope need in order to feel fulfilled? Let’s talk about it in a personal consultation.
