Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 9/12 & the Weekend: Postcard from Tokyo; Obama Update

Konbanwa from Tokyo!

Yesterday’s flight during the mostly all-day Moon void was uneventful, save for an early AM technical smartphone glitch which rendered by Uber app inoperative, causing a momentary much-ado-about-nothing panic as I searched for car service for a car service with an available driver to pick me up, stat. At the airport, I opted out of the whiz-bang techno body scanner machines, as I always do, and the TSA patdown lady was very sweet and far too young to have experienced a time when there were only metal detectors — or even no metal detectors at all, and passengers were greeted by loved ones directly at the gate. I know this because we talked about it, and my intention was to make our interaction as pleasant and human as possible. Our conversation made me wistful and sad, especially since I was flying on 9/11. I wondered if any human will ever be greeted by a loved one at an airport gate again…or at least in my lifetime.

It’s actually Saturday morning here, but it’s still Friday night in the Americas. The Moon is holding steady in security-seeking Taurus, and lunar aspects are harmonious and upbeat, if a bit indulgent. Let the sensual delights commence!

Moon cruises without interference until 6:24AM ET Saturday, when it is challenged by dear Saturn, everyone’s favorite wall or wet blanket. Push through whatever rained on your parade and keep your end goal in sight. Balance is restored with a sigh at 9:31AM ET, when the Moon goes void of course until 2:26AM ET on Sunday. Take care of routine tasks; avoid the malls and yard sales and chill, chill, chill.

By the time you wake up on Sunday, Moon will be in chatty Gemini, gathering and sharing information that may have more of an emotional depth and healing potential than usual, given an easy connection between loving Venus (arts, money, women, social expression) and potent Pluto, exact at 10:33AM ET. Note the potential for dreamy bewilderment around lunchtime, as Moon is challenged by nebulous Neptune at 1:05PM ET. Great for a day at the museum or your meditation temple; not so great for instant clarity, unless it shows up in the form of sublime intuition.

No sleeping in on Monday — the Gemini Moon will be buzzing happily until 10:05PM ET, supercharged by the 3rd Quarter Moon. Other planetary news of note: on Saturday at 5:57PM ET, action hero Mars leaves intense, effective and oftentimes vengeful Mars in Scorpio and enters high-flying Sagittarius. When it comes to action for the next few weeks, the sky’s the limit, especially when it is challenged by nebulous Neptune on the 21st. Who said anything has to be practical? Mars-Neptune aspects, especially in Sagittarius-Pisces, love a good razzle-dazzle show, whether it’s on Broadway or pitched by your local snake oil salesman…or guru…or fanatic.  There’s gotta be a vision — often based on the loftiest ideals and collective beliefs. The challenge is whether is based on anything real. Watch the headlines for showstopping actions and opinions…from the sublime to the ridiculous to the quite possibly deranged.

And now, the news.

Take last week’s sublime rose-colored face-off between Venus and Neptune and mix it with mental Mercury’s engagement with rebel technogeek Uranus and transformational Pluto and you’ve got a perfect recipe for the launch of Apple’s latest ground-breaking products. In other news, George Zimmerman made headlines again — in yet another raging social expression — as predicted he would continue to do until transiting Pluto finishes its square to his Libra Sun later this year. Even then, the over-the-top emotions are likely to dissipate any time soon, thanks to Pluto also challenging Venus, which refers to social expression. Triggering the bombastic entitlement expressed in this latest outburst: transiting Mars in Scorpio squaring his Venus in royal Leo.  Here’s his horoscope — birthtime unknown.

Elsewhere, President Obama gave a speech in which he said he would expand military actions intended to defeat ISIS. The speech began just two minutes after the Moon went void on Wednesday night. In Aries, sign of the warrior. Hmmm. When we last looked at Obama’s horoscope, transiting Mars (action/war) had just squared his Aquarius Ascendant. What did he do? Authorize military strikes. On Wednesday, transiting Mars was conjunct his Scorpio Midheaven, suggesting more assertive action — likely quite public. Add this to transiting Saturn now squaring his Ascendant, and we would expect to see a heavy authoritative hand, likely operating under considerable pressure. Check. And with Saturn ruling Obama’s 12th house (secret enemies, self-undoing, critical illness, government institutions and stuff kept tightly under wraps), we can expect that actions taken now are perhaps based on criteria of which we know naught…or at least not much.

Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to have a lovely weekend. Thank you for reading this forecast.

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday – Thursday 9/9-11/2014: Full Moon Fallout

Non-stop sirens and honking horns all day yesterday, as the Moon waxed to a lush, ripe fullness last night. What was going on in your neck of the woods? Did you note your dreams yesterday and this morning?

Moon continues its sojourn through soulful, empathic Pisces for most of the day. A positive application of energy is suggested for whatever task you’re on as the Moon makes a harmonious connection to an especially effective Mars in Scorpio around 3:09PM. Then it goes void for a few hours, offering the chance to focus on routine matters and/or chill. Get it off your desk before the void, as actions initiated during voids are more likely to be delayed or have no consequence. And don’t forget to VOTE!!!

Empowered revelations and news from underground are suggested in the headlines, as mental Mercury engages once more with the never-ending Uranus-Pluto square. Today it makes contact with ruthless Pluto at 6:38PM ET; it opposes rebel technogeek Uranus on Saturday.  Combined with other patterns in yesterday’s Full Moon, these stories seem especially relevant: first, a former portfolio manager at the notorious SAC Capital was sentenced to nine years in prison for insider trading.

Second, football player Ray Rice has finally been booted off the Baltimore Ravens’ roster, after a graphic video showing him punching his then-fiancee in the face and knocking her unconscious went viral. Is this one of the wounds to our collective psyche this Full Moon’s contact with wounded healer Chiron is seeking to release and cleanse? Do we really believe NFL bigwig Roger Goodell never saw this video until yesterday? Why was it OK for the Baltimore Ravens to Tweet several months ago that the fiancee in question took responsibility for her alleged role is having the living daylights knocked out of her? And why the heck is she defending her husband now? What’s up with those Venus-opposing-Neptune rose-colored glasses? And why do Americans love football so much? Don’t they know how dangerous and damaging it is? Astrologer Bill Herbst has written a compelling article about the Uranus-Pluto square and its impact on professional sports in the U.S. He’s written a lot of compelling articles, and I owe him a debt of gratitude — and also to astrologer Rockie Gardiner, who told me about Herbst so many years ago.

At 7:33PM ET, Moon shifts gears and charges into RAMbunctious Aries. That should carry us through a dynamic day of action and initiative tomorrow. Some of it may be bumpy, as the Moon makes contact with Uranus and Pluto, but overall, thoughts and communication will likely be flowing freely and spirits will be high. Moon goes void Wednesday at 8:58PM ET….not to enter the next sign, Taurus, until 9:17PM ET on Thursday. Rule #1  for coping with crises that crop up during Moon voids: consider that they may well be much ado about nothing. There’s a tendency to make mountains out of molehills during voids, and said mountains have a way of going “poof” once the Moon is back in gear. Case in point: CNN was in total alarm-freakout mode last Friday when the unfortunate pilots of a private plane lost touch with air traffic controllers and veered off course towards Cuba before crashing in the Caribbean. I saw it while standing in line at my credit union and thought, “Man, this is some mountain…”

Other news, in the wake of this Full Moon: weddings and impending births — the lush, ripe and dreamy potential of a Harvest Moon, combined with the romance of Venus opposed by Neptune. Neil Patrick Harris got married. So did two women in their 90s who have been together for over 70 years. The Duchess of Cambridge and the Prince of Wales are expecting another child.  Hooray!

It’s nice to end on a positive note, don’t you think? Yesterday the Senate passed what could be the beginning of a meaningful effort to overturn Citizens United with a constitutional amendment. Did I mention there may be a primary election in your state today? Don’t forget to vote!

If you feel like you’re in a crisis or a bit of a rut, rest assured you’re not alone. We are living in very interesting times! That being said, a personal astro-logical consultation can provide you with clarity and confidence. I look forward to a fine discussion with you about your horoscope.

Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 9/8/2014: Full Moon in Pisces – Practically Ideal or Totally Wigged Out?

Note your dreams upon waking, as the Pisces Moon conjoins visionary Neptune at 5:09AM ET. Intuition, feelings and other sensitivities are likely on the rise, in synch with the waxing Full Moon, exact at 9:38PM ET tonight. In between, around lunchtime ET, note the potential for a healing heart-to-heart or other deep revelation as the Moon makes a supportive contact to potent Pluto.

More on the Full Moon, as its patterns will ripple out through the rest of the week. This is the Harvest Moon and it’s a Supermoon — and you can find out why that’s so special here.  Full Moons offer enlightenment and/or release of projects that started or landed on your desk two weeks ago. What will you learn? Planetary patterns suggest a startling blend of the mystical and the practical. First, there’s a sharp contact between mental Mercury and ruthless Pluto (exact Tuesday at 6:38PM ET), suggesting a power play or empowerment in thoughts and communication.  You may find yourself making a bold pitch or laying it all on the table if you have a planet or point around 11-13 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn.  You’d be feeling quite optimistic about it, too, given that Mercury is also supported by expansive Jupiter (exact on Wednesday at 2:37PM ET).

Second, there’s a face-off between Venus (art, women, money, social expression) in discerning Virgo and nebulous Neptune, exact on Wednesday at 6:51AM ET. This is the mystical element, suggesting a need for beauty in its most idealized form, preferably accompanied by a choir of angels. Or a sublime ile flottante (floating island). Look for idealized Venusian themes in the headlines. You may be feeling the bewildering, bewitching fog of Neptune more personally  — and have been for some months now, with more to come — if you have a planet or important point around 5-7 degrees of Pisces, Sagittarius, Gemini and Virgo…or were born 5-6 days into any of those signs.

Third, there’s a communicative connection between taskmaster Saturn and the Sun (exact on Thursday at 11:04AM ET) which can be superbly applied to projects requiring discipline, detail and structure — and actually shipped the day before, when the Moon will not be void. Fourth, there’s an added flash of insight — electric and/or cosmic — suggested by another face-off between mental Mercury and rebel Uranus, exact on Saturday at 4:06AM ET. Here are a few stories that made headlines the last time Mercury made contact with the never-ending Uranus-Pluto square at the end of July.  And finally, action hero Mars is running wild in intensely focused — sometimes ruthless — Scorpio. Some may want to count to ten before lashing out.

The Sabian Symbols for tonight’s Full Moon at 16 degrees Pisces/Virgo are as follows. For the Moon in Pisces: “A Easter promenade.” For the Sun in Virgo: “A volcano in eruption.” Once again, astrology presents us with contradictory images and challenges us to figure out how they can be integrated. Sabian Symbol guru Blain Bovee observes that we have an image of raw, uncontrollable creative power on the one hand, versus an image of a socially acceptable and contained mode of creative expression. If you love Sabian Symbols, get Bovee’s book for more details. What happens when one wild energy comes into contact with that which is controlled? Bovee suggests we be mindful of “social capacities of acceptance and tolerance being tested by new, raw social expressions…flare-ups of all kind…energies that flow with a mind of their own…ideas that take form only after a long period of cooling down, as opposed to the natural pace…of a promenade”.

There’s an added element to the heightened emotional rush of this Full Moon, and that is an exact conjunction between the Moon and Chiron, often called “the wounded healer”. So whatever is slated to erupt into the headlines over the next few days is likely to be rooted in a long-standing wound to the psyche. You may feel this in your own personal world if you have a planet or angle around 15-17 degrees of Virgo, Pisces, Sagittarius or Gemini. It’s always helpful to know in what area of the horoscope Full Moons and New Moons fall, as you can expect that area of your life to be stimulated soon thereafter. If you don’t know where your planets are, consult your local astrologer.

Moon voids for the week are as follows. First on Tuesday, Moon will be void from 3:09PM ET until 7:33PM ET. That means if there’s an election happening in your city, as there is in New York, cast your vote before the void. You’re more likely to flake out during the void, or some other thing is more likely to happen that makes your vote of no consequence. So vote early! Because if you don’t vote, somebody else will. One of these days I’ll put that on a T-shirt.

Moon will also be void from Wednesday at 8:58PM ET until 9:17PM ET on Thursday — that’s a long time to focus on routine and roll with whatever twists detour your efforts to move forward in a straight line, but roll with them and chill you must. Moon will also be void from 9:31AM ET Saturday until 2:26AM ET on Sunday. Here’s more on Moon voids, if you’re new to the forecast.

And now, a little bit of news.

First, my favorite practical, mystical headline today concerns scientists who have been able to devise an experiment that enabled them to “transmit the thoughts of one individual into the brain of another thousands of miles away.”  Oh, these scientists — they’re finally catching on! Here’s a practical/mystical bit about hardcore data in the world of online dating, in which the CEO of OK Cupid notes the disconnect between what certain men say they are looking for in a mate vs. the prospects they actually contact. And speaking of hardcore, this week’s Modern Love column in the Sunday Times was written by a practical-minded woman who works in business that’s all about fantasy. She met her husband on the set of a porn movie; their marriage is rock solid, but not without a number of “strange realities”.

In other news, here’s a story the NYT has yet to cover — and I find this to be a strange reality, given the columns of ink devoted to the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson last month.  On August 5th, another young man was shot and killed by police while he was shopping at a Walmart. A panicked shopper (an alleged ex-Marine) called 911 to report that a man was waving a rifle around and pointing it at shoppers. This happened at 8:21PM ET in Beavercreek, Ohio. If you run that chart you will immediately notice the Moon in pie-in the-sky Sagittarius squared by nebulous Neptune, and also action hero Mars trining Neptune. And if any of the police officers responding to the call had been astrologers, they might have paused for a minute and thought, “Hmm….with Neptune so prominent, things may not be as they seem.”  Or “Gosh, that Mercury-Jupiter conjunction in Leo right on the 7th house cusp suggests the potential for exaggeration.” Alas, they were not astrologers, and two people died in the confusion. Now, a more accurate version of reality is beginning to take shape. I will be interested to see where this story is at in a couple of weeks.

Thank you for reading, sharing and supporting this forecast.

If you feel like you’re in a crisis or a bit of a rut, rest assured you’re not alone. We are living in very interesting times! That being said, a personal astro-logical consultation can provide you with clarity and confidence. I look forward to a fine discussion with you about your horoscope.

Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 9/5/2014 & the Weekend: Joan Rivers, RIP

TGIF!

Make the most of the morning hours to take care of business while the Moon is still engaged in Capricorn and supported by an energetic connection to action hero Mars.  At 11:08AM ET, Moon goes void until 7:59PM ET, suggesting a higher probability of twists in your efforts to move forward in a straight line. Stick to routine tasks, chill or start your weekend early, perhaps on a less dramatic, more refined note than in previous weeks, given that Venus leaves Leo for Virgo today at 1:07PM ET. Venus refers to social expression. Virgo refers to perfection and discernment.

At 7:59PM ET, Moon enters “who’s yer buddy” Aquarius for the bulk of the weekend, seeking to be of social significance and network with friends from all walks of life. Saturday’s a go for making purchases, though you may need to resist a temptation to overindulge around 2:11Pm ET, when the Moon opposes expansive, expensive Jupiter.

The evening favors more of what’s innovative and unconventional, suggested by a friendly connection between the Moon and rebel Uranus at 9:05PM ET. A few hours later, however, note the potential for a wet blanket or other imposed control suggested by a challenge between Moon and stern Saturn, which can not get out of Scorpio fast enough, if you ask me. Alas, we’re stuck with Saturn in Scorpio until the end of the year. Moon goes void again on Sunday at 1:19PM ET on a highly-charged challenge to aggressive Mars. If you’re a sports fan, keep an eye out for twists and upsets that favor the underdog until the Moon enters compassionate Pisces at 7:47PM ET.

No sleeping in on Monday. Moon will not be void and it will be waxing to fullness at 9:36PM ET.

And now, the news.

Wednesday’s potent alignment between the Sun and regenerative Pluto was the highlight of the week, suggesting news from underground, corruption exposed and/or resolved, oil and gas (underground resources) and healing.  In Virginia, former governor Bob McDonnell and his wife were found guilty of corruption. BP was found to be the “primary culprit” and  “reckless” four years after its Deepwater Horizon oil rig blew up; it now faces an additional $18 billion in penalties. Meanwhile, a dinosaur skeleton unearthed in Argentina some years ago was described in fascinating detail as the most ginormous dinosaur yet. Elsewhere, as predicted on June 11th, former Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor landed a seven-figure job on Wall Street. What will he be doing? Giving out advice.

When it came time to find a new job after losing a primary battle with David Brat, a relatively unknown college professor with deep support from Tea Party activists, the lawmaker said he eventually decided to head to the boutique investment bank to focus on dispensing advice to clients.

Mazel tov, Mr. Cantor! May we all be so richly rewarded for the wisdom we’ve accumulated over the years.

Which brings me to the subject of healing and regeneration, one of the more positive potentials of a Sun-Pluto alignment.  Here’s a fascinating NYT piece about the Center for Courage & Renewal, which “help(s) people strengthen their sense of purpose and deepen their self-awareness and understanding of others.” The author of the piece found himself wishing that every member of Congress would attend one of the Center’s retreats, to help bring this polarized body into some form of functional alignment. But the retreats work just as well for regular folks, too.

In other news, Joan Rivers,  passed away yesterday at 1:17PM ET in New York, when the Moon was exactly conjunct Pluto (power plays, transformation, catharses). Here is her horoscope — a slam dunk, given the life she led. How so? Take a quick look and we immediately note the Sun in pixie chatterbox Gemini opposing Moon in opinionated Sagittarius,  in a T square to a pugnacious and expansive/bombastic conjunction between Mars and Jupiter. Moon is in the 9th house, where it would need to seek an international reach, perhaps through a collective broadcast/publishing medium. The challenges from Mars and Jupiter in Virgo suggest a need to talk about everything, driven by a need for perfection.

The Gemini Sun is in a power-packed 3rd house of communication, along with a tight conjunction of mental Mercury and aesthetic Venus at 29 Gemini, which regular readers of this forecast know is also the Aries Point. So we immediately expect that social expression, communication and aesthetics are going to need prominence. And you can see why she might become known for having umpteen cosmetic surgeries, in a quest to achieve perfection. It’s interesting to note that Mars and Jupiter are in the 6th house (physical body) and that Mars rules her Aries Ascendant (how she needed to be seen).

An Aries Ascendant would need to be seen as a pioneer and an inspiration. Well, that totally fits. Both her Ascendant and her make-it-happen Capricorn Midheaven are close enough to the Aries Point to suggest a further need for prominence. This horoscope was born to be famous. It also has rebel Uranus in Aries, and in the 1st House. This suggests an electric, potentially shocking and unconventional first impression, and a need to disrupt the status quo. The potential for being a game-changer is further supported by a square to Uranus from ruthless Pluto. It is interesting to note that her Uranus, which rules the 12th house of critical illness/self-undoing was eclipsed in April. It is also interesting to note that her natal Saturn at 16 Aquarius was under pressure from transiting Saturn in Scorpio all summer.  Also suggesting a potential stress in health matters: her natal Neptune is currently opposed by transiting Neptune. Regular readers know that Neptune tends to dissolve whatever it touches. Her natal Neptune sits in the 6th house and rules the 12th, both of which refer to health matters.

Fascinating, isn’t it? RIP, Joan Rivers. You lived your horoscope to its fullest potential…and you won’t need any more face lifts now that you’re in Heaven. You’re perfect, just the way you are.

Final note — because I truly enjoy facilitating abundance for other people. The glamor photo in my last forecast of my beloved cat, Phoebe, was taken by photographer Jim Herrington. He’s an extremely gifted professional, and you can see more of his work here.

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday-Friday 9/2-5/2014: Sneak Peek at the Week; Saturn in Scorpio;Horoscope of a Beloved Cat

No sleeping in on this Back-To-Work/School Tuesday. The Moon is waxing in high-flying, opinionated Sagittarius, fueled by a square to the Virgo Sun at 7:11AM ET. A First Quarter Moon suggests a challenge to whatever seeds were planted on last week’s New Moon. What was that all about? “Piercing intellect” and integration of whatever sharp reality check or ambitious reach may have landed on your plate last week, especially if you have planets or angles around 2 degrees of Virgo, Pisces, Gemini and Sag…and 16-19 degrees of Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius or Taurus.  If you don’t know where your planets are, consult your local astrologer.

Deep perspective and issues of resources, healing and regeneration are facilitated over the next two days, courtesy of a harmonious alignment between potent Pluto and the Sun on Wednesday at 12:08PM ET, as well as supportive contacts to the optimistic Sag Moon from expansive Jupiter and innovative Uranus Tuesday at 8:10AM ET and 5:38PM ET, respectively. Avoid finalizing shipments and signing on the dotted line between 2:06PM and 6:15PM ET on Wednesday, when the Moon will be void-of-course. Stick to routine tasks and chill during this natural planetary rest period; roll with whatever twists may occur in your efforts to move forward in a straight line.

Once the Moon enters proactive Capricorn at 6:15PM ET on Wednesday, you’re likely to feel a push to make things happen, with the following caveats: a potential power play or emotional catharsis around 1PM ET and/or an upset to the status quo around 8:41PM ET, when the enterprising Moon is challenged by ruthless Pluto and rebel Uranus. I’ll give you an example of how one of these bumps can manifest later in this forecast.  Otherwise, forge ahead with your agenda until Friday at 11:08 AM ET, when the Moon once again goes void for the rest of the business day, until 7:59PM ET. Skip out early for the weekend without consequence; avoid impulse purchases and launching important initiatives; see if you notice a wandering “drift” in the energy of the day; avoid making mountains out of molehills.

Two planets change signs this week. Mercury, which rules the mind, travel and communication, leaves Virgo for Libra at 1:38AM Tuesday. Mercury excels in Virgo, where it easily tends to every exacting detail. In Libra, Mercury’s need is to be fair and pleasing, but it may miss — or avoid — unpleasant details for the sake of peace and/or appearances.  On Friday at 1:07PM ET, Venus leaves Leo for Virgo. Venus refers to social expression, women, aesthetics, finances. In Leo, Venus can be grand, dramatic and generous. Note how the ubiquitous Ice Bucket Challenge caught on fire (Leo is a fire sign) when Venus met up with expansive Jupiter earlier this month. The preceding link is comedian Wendy Liebman’s effort to raise awareness of ALS. She’s a Wellesley classmate, too — and will be on America’s Got Talent tonight at 9pm — go, Wendy, go! Vote for Wendy — rah rah rah! See? Dramatic Leo social expression. Let’s just say that in Virgo, social expression is likely to  be more refined, sometimes priggish and critical.

When planets change signs, we may need a day or two to adjust. Patience is advised if your communication and social expression experiences are a bit “wobbly”.

And now, the news.

Regular readers may recall a recent post about Saturn, the planetary taskmaster, finally past the halfway mark in Scorpio, sign of energy, resources and transformation, a.k.a. sex, other people’s money/debt and death. Saturn began its journey in Scorpio back in October of 2012. At that time, we anticipated that issues involving deep, difficult consequences of sex, death and money would dominate the headlines. And in fact, we have seen plenty of disturbing and controversial stories involving rape, contraception, abortion, crushing debt and — at least in the US — downright horrific stories about the death penalty. Did you know that the US is only one of nine nations that regularly executes convicted criminals (not including random citizens stopped by police)?

Anyway, there’s been tremendous controversy in the above-referenced matters, especially in areas of CONTROL (Saturn!). But now with Saturn past the halfway point — i.e., 15 degrees of Scorpio — as expected, we’re seeing more and more headlines about pushing back. In Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, judges have ruled that certain restrictions placed on reproductive health clinics that provide abortions are unconstitutional. Sunday’s NYT magazine features a fascinating profile of a pioneering Dutch doctor who has found a way to provide women around the world with a method of terminating pregnancies without having to travel to a clinic.  In California, a federal judge ruled that its death penalty system was unconstitutional. We saw a similar pattern in cases involving same sex marriage when Saturn was in Libra a few years back. Once Saturn was moving forward past the halfway point, the tides were began to turn in favor of marriage (Libra) equality (Libra!), as predicted. Interesting, isn’t it? Search the archives of this forecast for specific examples.

In other news, there was more than one upset at the U.S. Open while the Moon was void, as predicted. Moon voids often suggest a surprise twist or victory to the underdog in sports matches. Here’s some of what happened on Friday afternoon — and how about this:

Two matches were bona fide upsets: a 32-year-old former junior champion disposing of the No. 2 seed and a Swiss teenager bouncing the No. 6 seed. The third match went by the book according to the rankings but not according to anything else.

Here’s the whole article, also from Friday. And here’s another upset during a long void on August 27th.

Meanwhile, sniping and bickering between the sexes of a most territorial kind erupted on two airplane flights last week, perhaps reflecting last Wednesday’s clash among stern Saturn, Mars and Venus, all in the stubborn signs of Leo and Scorpio. A more productive reflection of this energetic combination can be seen in this article, “The Decisive Marriage,” which argues that couples who are proactive about making plans are more likely to succeed than those who are not. What kind of marriage do you have?

Finally, you may recall I mentioned some days ago that I’d been tending to my adorable, but ailing, Himalayan cat. I’m sorry to say that she departed for Kitty Heaven last Thursday. She was the cat I always wanted when I was a little girl growing up in a house full of dog people. Not that dogs aren’t great, but you know what I mean if you’re a cat person. But did you know that pets have horoscopes, too?

I was fortunate to know Phoebe’s birth time — July 17, 1997 at 11:45AM in Sherman Oaks, CA— for astrology students who would like to see the chart. She was a nurturing Cancer with Moon in opinionated Sagittarius in the highly communicative 3rd house. She had a distinctive meow and was not afraid to use it. She loved to travel. She had a Libra Ascendant — beauty and social grace personified. She was highly intuitive and a little “out there,” suggested by her Sun opposed by nebulous Neptune (she was named after the spacey Phoebe Buffet from Friends). But she was also a hard worker, fiercely determined, suggested by an opposition between Mars and Saturn — which all together formed a loose Cardinal Grand Cross (remember the dynamic energy we experienced in April)?  If I told Phoebe I needed to get up at 6AM, she’d jump up on the bed and meow right on time.

With her horoscope,  I could see two years ago the potential for a critical illness that might develop at the end of 2013, when controlling Saturn began a series of long, tough contacts to Phoebe’s Mercury (ruler of the house of critical illness & also neurological issues), Venus (rules kidneys and her 1st house, the health center) and Jupiter (rules the liver, the hips and her 6th house of the physical body). In fact, she suffered from a combination of all three potentials, but the one that proved more than her strong will and heart could handle was the third hit of Saturn to her Jupiter (hips, liver).

I am deeply grateful to Diane Samsel, a highly gifted animal communicator whose insights about Phoebe’s physical condition were astonishing, as were the loving messages she relayed from Phoebe about Phoebe’s concern for my well-being, which was delaying her transition.  Diane helped me move quickly into a space of release and joy. She assured me that “our pets are perennials,” capable of returning to us again after “a nice long vacation”. She mentioned a friend of mine by name — Phoebe had a message for him, which I relayed. And get this: this friend had dreamed about Phoebe the night before she passed — it was definitely Phoebe, he said — but in the body of a black and white kitten!

She left this world at 1:46PM ET in Forest Hills, NY on 8/28/2014. Since I had to take her to a vet, I knew I would not have full control over the timing of the event, but there was a window of a couple of hours that suggested the procedure would be smooth. As it turned out, it started a few minutes later than I’d hoped, with the Moon in an approaching connection to Pluto and Uranus. Remember what I wrote earlier about potential bumps or surges with those planets? The bump in this case was the vet’s decision to ignore my warning not to touch Phoebe’s hind leg, which caused her pain. A power play resulting in an emotional catharsis — the potential of Moon to Pluto. Otherwise, the vet and his staff could not have been kinder, and Phoebe made her transition with great dignity. I hope to see her in my dreams one night soon. She was the best assistant this astrologer has ever had.

Astro-logical Forecast for Monday-Wednesday 8/25-27/2014: New Moon in Virgo; Sneak Peek at the Week

Happy Monday — and Tuesday!

Did anyone else notice the subtle shift in energy around 10:13AM ET, the exact time of today’s New Moon? I was up very early this morning, as I have been in recent days, checking on the comfort of my beloved but ailing 17-year-old kitty. I planned to write this forecast in the dead of the Moon, but as it turns out, I needed more rest. What time did I wake up — without an alarm? 10:13AM ET — to the minute. Coincidence or conspiracy? I offer this an example of how you can use the times provided in this forecast. If something notable happens in your own personal world, see if it’s in synch with an exact planetary pattern. If you know your horoscope well enough to know what degrees your angles and planets are at, you can really have fun with this exercise. If you don’t know where your planets are, there’s a little Astro-Basics Report you can order here that will clue you in.

The New Moon — i.e.,  the monthly meet-up of the Sun and Moon — happened at 2 degrees 19 minutes of Virgo. For those of you who like to look up the Sabian Symbols, read for 3 degrees of Virgo (always round up to the next number when using these Symbols).  A New Moon offers us an opportunity to re-set  intentions and goals for the next lunar cycle.  Sometime today or tomorrow, light a candle and make a list.  Around September 2nd, on the First Quarter Moon, we can expect a challenge to those goals, with appropriate adjustments made. At the time of the Full Moon on the 8th, we can expect illumination on the success or failure of our goals for the cycle. If we succeeded, we can consciously release our success into our reality; if we failed, we let go of whatever did not work. After the Third Quarter Moon on the 15th, we can review our achievements, tie up loose ends and get ready to begin another New Moon on September 24th.

Last month’s New Moon in Leo focused on creative self-expression. How do you express your bliss? Keywords for this month’s Virgo New Moon  include perfection, discernment, work, service, integration, analysis. Whom or what does your creative self-expression serve? How does it function? How have you cooperated with and/or integrated it into your daily routine?

Virgo also rules the digestive tract, where it keeps busy instinctively separating the wheat from the chaff. It keeps elements that provide nourishment and eliminates those which do not. Some digestive systems work more efficiently than others, depending on what they are given to process. What is your process? Is it efficient? What does your gut tell you? Your instincts may well be functioning with laser beam intensity and accuracy in the wake of this New Moon — and I was delighted to see its potency reflected with the usual astonishing synchronicity in Beth Owlsdaughter’s Tarot Card of the Week.

So what’s so potent about this New Moon? First, a potentially ruthless application of penetrating energy, for better or for worse , suggested by today’s hook-up (at 3:30PM ET) between action hero Mars and stern Saturn in take-no-prisoners Scorpio. If you’re in a vengeful mood, you could do some damage. If you want to execute a meticulously detailed plan that might even have a humanitarian purpose, you could create something wonderfully helpful and healing. What will you choose? Aiding and abetting this meticulous plan or a genius germ of an idea is mental Mercury in Virgo, supporting the Mars and Saturn. This suggests exacting efficiency and ease of communication. Not a bad week to make a pitch — just avoid the Moon voids.

As for the humanitarian part, this morning at 5:38AM ET we had a lovely alignment between Venus (love, money, social expression) in drama queen Leo and Uranus in pioneering Aries. Venus-Uranus contacts suggests a willingness to go outside the box, and as long as you’re not a cat, that is usually a very good thing. Expressed with passion, this plan may well challenge the established order, suggested by a tense connection between Venus and the Mars-Saturn hook-up. In the past we’ve seen Venus-Saturn challenges reflected in “cutting” or  “chilly” or “reality check” headlines…. and also by stories of “women of steel” (up side). This challenge is exact at 2:22PM ET on Tuesday. An example of an reality check just in:  a report from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. An example of a “woman of steel” — see note on author and pioneer Laura Ingalls Wilder in a few paragraphs.

Venus will challenge Mars on Wednesday at 11:46AM ET. We can expect combustion or fiery passion between the sexes, and the latter can be quite juicy. It seems to me that this Virgo New Moon, together with these challenges to Venus,  is inviting us to consider how we can better integrate feminine archetypical expression (Venus) vs. masculine/patriarchal archetypical expression (Mars-Saturn) — perhaps with a spiritual perspective, suggested by an opposition between Moon and nebulous Neptune, exact today at 6:15PM ET. For those seeking a dreamy escape tonight, there’s your opportunity.

The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon at 3 Virgo is “two guardian angels”. Now this is a very comforting image. But why two? Perhaps one is masculine and the other is feminine — or some other duality? Sabian Symbol guru Blain Bovee writes that the angels suggest “divine stewardship”, and that we might consider this Symbol as with an eye open for “soft, imperceptible realities that stand guard” in the face of hard or otherwise unyielding structures, or new ways of thinking seeking to penetrate old forms.

You will be more personally influenced this New Moon if you have planets or points around 2 degrees of Virgo, Pisces, Gemini and Sagittarius. And this week, those of you with planets or points at around 16-19 degrees of Leo, Taurus, Scorpio or Aquarius may well experience a release of the conflict or ambitious call to action suggested by the tension among Venus, Mars and Saturn. For example, Barack Obama’s Ascendant is 18 Aquarius. Today he authorized “air surveillance flights of ISIS over Syria,” as a “potential precursor to actual airstrikes”.

In other news, the autobiography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of “Little House on the Prairie,” will be published this autumn for the first time. Yup, finally the real story of her life, not the fictionalized — albeit much-loved — version.  Wilder’s horoscope has the Sun at 18 Aquarius and Mercury conjunct Jupiter at 15 Aquarius — a powerhouse combo for a writer.  Also of note: her charismatic Mars-Neptune square has been supercharged by Uranus and Pluto for several months now. And the book publication will coincide with her fifth Saturn return, an event everyone experiences every 28-29 years. A Saturn return is a critical stage in life development, usually offering an opportunity for a new lease on life.  Isn’t astrology amazing?

Keep your organizational focus going on Tuesday, as the Virgo Moon is well-supported during business hours. Get if off your desk if you can, as the Moon goes void at 10:29PM ET… until 5:54PM ET on WEDNESDAY. That should make for some interesting upsets at the U.S. Open. Go with the flow of whatever twists and delays may crop up in your efforts to more forward in a straight line; stick to routine and chill, chill, chill. Your other Moon void this week happens Friday at 12PM ET — until Saturday at 4:53AM ET. Sounds like an early start to the Labor Day weekend….

…which you might as well enjoy to the fullest, given the “bitter, frigid conditions” predicted this winter by the Farmer’s Almanac. This is the same publication that correctly predicted last winter’s polar vortex (modern meteorologists did not). How does the Farmer’s Almanac do it?

The publication, not to be confused with the New Hampshire-based Old Farmer’s Almanac, uses a secret formula based on sunspots, planetary positions and lunar cycles for its long-range weather forecasts.

Of course it does.

Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 8/22/2014 & The Weekend: More on President Obama

TGIF!

Lucky you if you’re starting the weekend early, continuing the natural cosmic break that began as of 3:34PM ET Thursday, when the Moon drifted into the void in Cancer, not to enter party-hearty Leo until 4:49PM ET today. Speaking of Leo, today is the last full day of the Sun in Leo. The Sun enters Virgo at 12:46AM ET on Saturday and starts taking names, numbers and otherwise offering the organizational energy that will be upfront and center once the New Moon kicks in Monday at 10:13AM ET with a vengeance.

Chill today…or continue to follow up and/or mull over whatever useful facts you dug up on Thursday. Have a very happy Happy Hour on Friday night, once the Moon enters Leo. If shopping is on your to-do list this weekend, do it Saturday, as the Moon will be void of course from 4:23AM ET Sunday until 5:33AM ET Monday.  Around 10AM ET Saturday is when we can benefit from the lift suggested by the Moon’s hook-up with expansive Jupiter; around 10PM ET we’ll have another pleasant boost suggested by Moon together with Venus.

Conflicts and/or crankiness may hit those of us with planets around 17-18 degrees of Leo, Scorpio, Taurus and Aquarius, as the Moon clashes with warrior Mars and stern Saturn (both in ruthless Scorpio) in the wee hours on Sunday.  Chill, chill, chill on Sunday — or wrap up projects you started at the beginning of the last New Moon. That listlessness or restlessness you may feel is typical of a “dead Moon” i.e., the end of the lunar cycle. Somehow we sense that new energy is just around the corner, but we don’t know what it is.  No sleeping in on Monday.

And now, the news.

How interesting to see the stock markets on yet another roll, in light of Monday’s super-indulgent and expansive hook-up between Venus (money) and Jupiter (expansion). Elsewhere, I would love to get my hands on superstar pitcher Mo’ne Davis’s birthday — something more specific than “she turned 13 two months ago”. But didn’t her tour de force performance — pitching a shut-out game and landing on the cover of Sports Illustrated — lift our spirits, too? In other news, on yesterday’s easy but potent alignment between mental Mercury and investigative Pluto, here’s some new research on likely causes of autism, focusing on hyperactive synapses as a likely suspect. This is intriguing because in the horoscopes I have seen of people diagnosed with autism, I have noted planetary patterns suggesting overstimulated nerves, often reflected in stressful aspects between Mercury and Uranus, for example.

Meanwhile, how interesting to see NYT columnist Maureen Dowd’s latest take on President Obama, given the patterns currently active in his horoscope, as noted in prior forecasts. The column is called “Alone Again, Naturally” — and what have we been saying about the heavy, loner potential of Saturn, now at 17 Scorpio, where it has been challenging Obama’s 18 Aquarius Ascendant for over two months? According to Dowd, “The president who was elected because he was a hot commodity is now a wet blanket.”

On Monday — on the New Moon at 2 Virgo — Mars, which is currently ruthlessly and effectively placed in Scorpio, for better or for worse, will catch up with Saturn at 17 degrees of Scorpio, as both planets square Obama’s Ascendant. In traditional astrology, Mars and Saturn have an unsavory reputation; in modern astrology, they certainly have their strengths, but they can also be difficult to manage. With the two of them together we see the potential for an ambitious outburst of expression, for better or for worse. Sometimes if the energy of the transit is not expressed by the person, it is acted upon that person. In the case of Mars, it can be reflected as an accident or an angry attack. In the case of Saturn, it may be experienced as a loss — sometimes as a death or illness in the extended family — or a health issue for the person concerned. Let’s watch and see how this potent pattern will be expressed in Obama’s reality over the weekend and during the next New Moon cycle. In the news this week, I would argue that it has been reflected in horrifically efficient acts of aggression too awful to mention overseas, and also in the United States — caught on tape.

Cue Gilbert O’Sullivan now, please.

Astro-logical Forecast for Monday-Thursday 8/18-21/2014: Sneak Peek at the Week

Good afternoon!

A busy buzz kicked in last night (Sunday) at 6:41PM ET, with the Moon’s ingress into information junkie Gemini. It will stay in gear until 10:54PM ET Tuesday and then go void-of-course until 4:45AM ET Wednesday. Make your calls and pitches, the more creatively self-expressive and inspired, the better. You’ll be supported by a dramatic, playful and generous (upside) hook-up between loving Venus and expansive Jupiter in regal Leo, exact this morning at 1:21AM ET. The downside? A potentially unsavory display of royal edicts and tantrums of entitlement. If you’re seeing the latter in your personal world, chances are that little drama king or queen is not getting the love it sorely needs, especially if the affected planet of said king or queen is also in Leo. You might be one of them if you have a planet or point around 7 degrees of Leo (and perhaps Scorpio, Taurus and Aquarius).

Another pattern exact today is a face-off between mental Mercury, operating at maximum efficiency in detail-oriented Virgo, and empathetic, inspiring Neptune, also well-placed in compassionate Pisces. Visionary communication perhaps involving work (Virgo) is suggested — that is the plus side. On the down side, perhaps a bit of confusion around 11:42PM ET tonight, when the face-off will be exact.

Add this pattern to the aforementioned drama potential of Venus (social expression, arts) and Jupiter (over-the-top), and it is interesting to see that the Metropolitan Opera (Leo) and its unions (Virgo) have reached a tentative deal after an all-night bargaining session.  I also find it interesting that an over-the-top dramatic campaign for a charity (Neptune) was all over the news this weekend. Have you heard about the Ice Bucket Challenge? Watch Lady Gaga, a master at dramatic self-expression, take a one for the team. Coincidence or conspiracy?

On Wednesday, when the Moon enters Cancer at 4:45AM ET, the focus shifts to emotional security: family, home/homeland and nurturing. Patterns on Wednesday are relatively light, save for an easy alignment between mental Mercury and potent Pluto that is exact on Thursday at 3:15PM ET. This connection facilitates investigative reporting and deep, potentially healing communication, and we are likely to see plenty in the headlines that day, as the Moon makes its weekly contact with the disruptive Uranus-Pluto square.

The only Moon void of note in the Americas — i.e., one that could disrupt your efforts to move forward in a straight line during business hours this week — is on Thursday at 3:34PM ET, when the Moon drifts off into Cancer on an easy but disciplined connection to sober Saturn. Go with the flow of whatever twists that may arise and stick to routine. Moon won’t get into gear until Friday at 4:49PM ET; how lucky for you if you’re taking Friday off.

And now, some other news reflecting planetary patterns.

In the category of the wretched excess suggested by Venus conjunct Jupiter in Leo, it was reported yesterday that the young unarmed man who was killed by a police officer in Ferguson after apparently being stopped for jaywalking was shot six times. Here’s John Oliver with his righteous take on the situation. In other news, did you know that in medical astrology, Venus refers to the kidneys? How interesting to see a front-page article about brokers who will connect those who need a kidney transplant with potential donors…for a hefty (Jupiter) price.

I’m taking a few days off. Will be back on Friday. Have a most excellent week, and thank you for reading this forecast.

Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 8/15 & The Weekend: De-Luxe

TGIF, but there’s plenty to accomplish before you head out of town for the weekend…

An easy flow of communication this morning, as mental Mercury and the zippy Aries Moon form a harmonious connection at 11:50AM ET, after which the Moon goes void for exactly eight minutes — blink and you’ll miss it!. From noon ET onwards, the pace slows down…dare I say even calms down, as the Moon enters placid Taurus and sets about organizing its surroundings in an effort to build or maintain material security.

Ooooh goody…a weekend with Moon in Taurus. This facilitates the enjoyment of sensual pleasures: food, wine, song — a snuggle, massage or roll in the hay.  Friday night’s indulgence is further aided and abetted by a luxe-loving challenge between Venus and the Moon at 7:57PM ET, followed by an easy alignment with Neptune at 11:35PM ET. Still more indulgence may be yours as the Moon squares expansive Jupiter just after midnight on Saturday. Not to mention a potentially over-the-top connection between sugar-sweet Venus and cosmic sugar daddy Jupiter soon after midnight on Monday morning. This aspect will be in effect all weekend, and let’s just say that if you are shopping for sweets or luxury items this weekend, do it on Saturday, because the Moon will be void-of-course from 8:26AM ET to 6:41PMET on Sunday. Whatever impulse shopping you do is likely to be ultimately of little use and it will cost more than you wanted to spend.

Tough, but thankfully brief aspects this weekend include a feisty/combative face-off between the stubborn Taurus Moon and equally stubborn Mars in Scorpio at 9:28AM ET on Sunday….followed by another stubborn face off between control freak authority figure Saturn and the Moon at 6:56PMET…let’s watch the headlines. The 3rd Quarter Moon offers a challenge to the illumination you may have received on last weekend’s Full Moon. That happens at 8:26AM ET Sunday before drifting away into a Moon void. At 6:41PM ET on Sunday, Moon enters chatty Gemini, seeking to inform and be informed…and that is how we will begin the start of the next work week.

One other planetary shift of note: mental Mercury leaves regal Leo for nitpicky but much more humble Virgo on Friday at 12:44PM ET. This bodes well for rational analysis and a willingness to hammer out details over the next few weeks.

OK, so…Ferguson. This headline says most of it: “Images of Unrest Evoke Civil Rights Era” — which should be no surprise to anyone who’s been following this forecast for the past three years — or anyone who’s learned on their own that The Planetary Pattern Everyone Should Be Talking About, i.e. the current square between Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn, is a critical “next step” of the conjunction between Uranus and Pluto that happened in the mid-1960s. Astrologers have been writing for years that the hot-button issues of the 1960s would return with greater urgency and upheaval now.

As for the militarization of US police forces, thanks to all that nifty weaponry the military has given away, now that its sort of out of Iraq and Afghanistan, we again see that symbolized by Uranus (technology) in Aries (warrior) and Pluto (empowerment) in Capricorn (establishment). Recall that Uranus was last in Aries in the early 1930s, which coincided with the militarization of certain other law enforcement entities overseas, which led to World War II. Aiding and abetting the somewhat sneaky consolidation of power in Establishment entities (e.g., law enforcement and also Capricorn-ruled corporations) is Saturn in Scorpio. Why? Because Saturn in Scorpio and Pluto in Capricorn are in a relationship called “mutual reception”. I’ve written about how this mutual reception can be used constructively. Here it is again:

First, a constructive connection between Saturn in Scorpio and Pluto in Capricorn — and it is rare to see such a cooperative aspect between the planet of structure and the planet of transformation. This connection is especially significant because Saturn rules the sign of Capricorn and Pluto rules the sign of Scorpio…and thus, the two planets are said to be in “mutual reception”. “Mutual reception” is an astro-logical technogeek term for “really constructive connection”…but for doing what? How about…moving forward on doing what needs to be done when the writing is on the wall…without whingeing about it? As in tighten your belts and put on your big girl panties. Deal with it — no more kicking the can down the road. This is your challenge– whether it is dealing with a ginormous budget deficit, or taking your own impossible dream to the next level. Whatever you need to do, DO IT. You may find yourself surprised at the positive results!

So why is it “somewhat sneaky”? Because we are talking about Scorpio, which keeps its cards close to the vest, and Pluto, which rules Scorpio. And now many people are shocked — just shocked — at all the masks and tanks and body armor menacingly on display….but they really just haven’t been paying attention. This post written in June links an article about all that surplus gear being given to local police departments. An op-ed in today’s NYT informs us that the law that allowed this giveaway went into effect is 1997.  Hmmm…a look at planetary patterns back then would be interesting; we’d likely see connections then that relate to current patterns.

As for the “sneaky” accumulations of power by other corporate entities, a study released this week by two political science professors concludes that the average American has “virtually no impact” on the making of policy in this country. So there’s another wake-up call….planning to vote in the November mid-term elections? We have two more exact squares between Uranus and Pluto left in this very long cosmic wake-up call: on December 15th and on April 16th, 2015.

Here’s a wake-up call that seems to be leading to an uplifting ending. The Uranus-Pluto square also suggests upheaval and insecurity in employment matters. It may be a great time to strike out on your own (Uranus in Aries) as an entrepreneur, but if that’s not an option for you, that can be tough. Yesterday’s NYT featured a heartbreaking story about a single mom struggling mightily to survive as a Starbucks barista, despite a three-hour commute and insanely unpredictable hours. Well, gosh darn it, someone at Starbucks reads the New York Times, and the company announced plans to change its insane scheduling method, hopefully right away.  Huzzah.

Last, but not least — another example of the Uranus-Pluto cycle in action. From The Guardian, this profile of Ellen Gerber and Pearl Berlin, who are “the lead plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging [North Carolina’s] voter-approved constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Gerber and Berlin committed to one another in mid-1966, when Uranus and Pluto were conjunct. Now, on the Uranus-Pluto square, that commitment is being taken to a whole new level of awareness.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Astro-logical Forecast for Wednesday & Thursday 8/13-14/2014: Robin Williams, RIP

Up and at ’em.

As of 9AM ET, Moon charged into pioneering Aries, the zodiac sign associated with new beginnings. This feisty energy may feel like a breath of fresh air after two days of potential melancholic floundering in ethereal, soulful Pisces, the sign associated with endings. After the news of Robin Williams’ tragic suicide, followed last night by news of Lauren Bacall’s passing, we could use a lift. Exact planetary patterns today suggest a warm, personal vibe as the fiery Moon makes an easy connection to loving Venus at 11:43AM  ET…followed by an expansive/optimistic connection to Jupiter at 7:27PM ET. Huzzah.

There’s no Moon void today or tomorrow to deter your initiatives or shopping sprees. The Moon makes its weekly contact with ruthless Pluto and rebel Uranus at 3:54AM ET and 12:14PM ET on Thursday. These contacts suggest a potential power play or catharsis, followed by a revelation or other shake-up of the status quo. Any upsets tomorrow may well find an easy balance by the end of the day, as the Sun and Moon make a harmonious connection.

Take advantage of the resourceful energy flow suggested by an easy connection between action hero Mars and potent Pluto, which will be exact on Friday. This pattern suggests stamina, drive and focus in your quest for world domination. Go for it.

And now, the news.

Like every other astrologer on the planet, of course I went straight to my computer to see how the potential for Robin Williams’s suffering and self-destruction was suggested by planetary patterns — not only in his horoscope, but in context of what we would expect in the headlines in the aftermath of 1) last weekend’s Full Moon in Leo/Aquarius; and 2) transiting Mars triggering April’s solar eclipse. These events were discussed in my last two forecasts.

Regarding the Full Moon, remember how we expected that people with planets or points at 18 degrees of Leo or Aquarius would be more personally affected. We could expect a release of energy in matters specific to the individual’s horoscope, and as an example, we talked about Barack Obama’s Ascendant (how he needs to be seen) at 18 Aquarius. Got that? Thus it is no surprise to see that Pluto, the ruler of Robin Williams’ Scorpio Ascendant (here is his horoscope) is at 18 degrees of Leo, and it is squared by the important Sun/Moon midpoint at 18 degrees of Taurus. The Sun/Moon midpoint refers to relationship.

Regarding the trigger of April’s 8 Taurus solar eclipse by transiting Mars, we anticipated a release of energy not unlike what we experienced when MH17 was shot down by Ukrainian rebels last month. On that day, transiting Mars hit 25 Libra, the degree of April’s lunar eclipse. We could say that the innocents on board MH17 were eclipsed. We could observe that we are reacting to Williams’ suicide/sudden release with a  similar outpouring of emotion, as he, too, was eclipsed. I’d argue that millions of people felt like the lights had gone out ever so briefly in their own personal worlds, too, as they paused to consider how a man who was loved by so many could have suffered so much that he left it all  — and us — behind. When an eclipse is triggered by a transiting planet, a new awareness can emerge out of the darkened pause.

This made me think about a very compelling review a friend sent me a few weeks ago of a book called Stay: A History of Suicide and the Philosophies Against It by Jennifer Michael Hecht. One of the arguments Hecht makes is that there’s a little bit of homicide in every suicide. When someone extinguishes their mortal spark, a little spark in all of us is extinguished, too. We are obligated to stay on Earth because we are all connected, she argues.  Here are her exact words — they are so apt for the Pisces Moon we experienced over the past few days:

“We are indebted to one another and the debt is a kind of faith — a beautiful, difficult, strange faith. We believe each other into being.”

Really, the whole book review is worth a read. And the book, too.

Robin Williams was born July 21, 1951 at 1:34PM (CST) in Chicago. He has Sun at 28 Cancer; Moon at 9 Pisces; Ascendant at 12 Scorpio. So immediately we are alerted to these probable needs: 1) to provide emotional security; 2) to work with intangibles, ideals and impressions; and 3) to be seen as someone of depth, power and control.

Sun in Cancer with Moon in Pisces suggests, according to astrologer Grant Lewi, “a sailboat personality, tacking with the wind and tide…keeping in cahoots with with the weather conditions as you find them.” This is likely a highly intuitive person with a strong emotional flow. He may seek approval by being agreeable — possibly overly so. Other patterns in the horoscope echo this potential, suggesting 1) someone who is pushed around by forces beyond his control; and 2) who likely gives himself away to others at the expense of developing his own talents. I’ve just read an interesting tribute to Williams posted on Facebook by actor Peter Coyote suggesting that by not being fully trained to harness his dreams, this led to the choice he made to end his life. The struggle among dreams, excess and control is so clear in Williams’ horoscope, especially in recent months.

His Pisces Moon is opposed by Venus in Virgo and the South Node; it is conjunct the North Node. This suggests a strong maternal influence, as well as self-indulgence. It is interesting to learn that Williams’ first comic impression was reportedly of his grandmother. His mother was a fashion model, and likely exposed him to the world of entertainment. With Saturn in Virgo at the Aries Point (and in the 11th, ruling the 3rd), we would expect the father to be prominent and perhaps critical, strongly affecting Williams’ heavy mindset and feelings of loveability.  Interesting to note his father was a prominent executive who, when told of Williams’ decision to become a performer, suggested  he have a Plan B, “like welding, just in case.” Ouch.

A need to broadcast his razor-sharp perspectives without censorship is suggested by his Mercury in regal Leo conjunct ruthless Pluto and the Midheaven (public status/career). This pattern makes me think of the wise-cracking DJ he played in Good Morning, Vietnam.  A lovely expression of his Cancerian need to nurture reminds me of Mrs. Doubtfire. His Pisces Moon reminds me of What Dreams May Come and The Fisher King. And so on.

Williams’ need to be seen as in control — suggested by his Scorpio Ascendant — is echoed by a Grand Trine (three planets or points that form an equilateral triangle) among the Pisces Moon, Mars and Uranus together in Cancer, and the Scorpio Ascendant. Sure, a Grand Trine in the Water signs can be seen as “lucky” because it’s not afraid to live by its own set of rules (and gets away with it).  But it also suggests a projection of emotional self-sufficiency that functions as a defense against hurt. It would likely be difficult for someone with a Grand Trine to ask for help, especially in these Water Signs. Grand Trines tend to keep people far away.

Part of the defensive structure of the Grand Trine includes the Mars-Uranus conjunction, suggesting his potential for comic genius. This volatile combination is also part of another dynamic pattern in Williams’ horoscope called a T-square. Here, Mars and Uranus are blown up into dazzlingly imaginative proportions, as they sit between a challenging opposition between Jupiter (expansion, wretched excess, optimism, generosity) and Neptune (vision, drugs, showbiz, faith, charity). Of course he’d make a wonderful genie — as he did in Aladdin. But note that all of the planets in this T-square have been under intense pressure by the never-ending Uranus-Pluto square.

Given the above patterns, is it any surprise to read in Williams’ NYT obituary that he was:

The privileged [only child] of a Detroit auto executive who grew up chubby and lonesome, playing by himself with 2,000 toy soldiers in an empty room of a suburban mansion…

Can you see how he brought to life the patterns that were in his horoscope?

There’s one other pattern of note that suggests the potential for suffering.  And that pattern is a connection between his vulnerable Pisces Moon and a midpoint between Saturn/Pluto. I noticed this pattern in Steve Jobs’ horoscope after he died and was struck by its implications. This pattern suggests (again per Noel Tyl) “emotional coldness; renunciation; giving up”.  But  Steve Jobs seemed to have such a perfect life (reflecting his Virgo Ascendant’s “need to be seen as perfect”). Yet this pattern so suggests there’s more to the story, and in fact, that’s what came out after Steve Jobs died.

And this is what is so intriguing about astrology: we do see things in the horoscope that a person’s closest associates — including therapists — fail to appreciate or understand, and we do see when difficulties are likely to arise. Carl Jung said as much when he wrote a letter in 1947 offering his “opinion on astrology” (with gratitude to astrologer Steffan Vanel for bringing this to my attention).

Since you want to know my opinion about astrology I can tell you that I’ve been interested in this particular activity of the human mind since more than 30 years. As a psychologist I am chiefly interested in the particular light the horoscope sheds on certain complications in the character. In cases of difficult psychological diagnosis I usually get a horoscope in order to have a further point of view from an entirely different angle. I must say that I very often found that the astrological data elucidated certain points which I otherwise would have been unable to understand.

The challenges — and potential — in Robin Williams horoscope for 2014 are clear. We see it in the super-charged T-square. We see it in measurements involving the Ascendant, Mars (action) and the potentially self-destructive South Node. And we see the trigger for action with Sunday’s Full Moon, which conjoined his Pluto (ruler of the Ascendant) and squared the Sun/Moon (relationship) midpoint. Transiting Saturn, which rules Williams 3rd house of mindset squared Pluto and opposed that midpoint. Saturn-Pluto transits are nearly always difficult. Saturn in touch with the Sun/Moon midpoint suggests difficulties in relationship. Adding to this heavy period is the bewildering fog of transiting Neptune, which was very close to Williams’ Pisces Moon. Neptune-Moon transits can be dangerously dreamy. It’s no surprise that Williams, who struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, had a relapse earlier this year.

And here is the sorrowful part, from the point of view of an astrologer. We can also see when this challenging period is likely to end! By the end of the year, transiting Jupiter to the Midheaven may well have been reflected in professional opportunities and accolades similar to what he experienced in prior Jupiter transits. Other measurements also support the potential for rebirth and personal happiness next year. Now, Robin Williams will still likely receive the acclaim and recognition in professional status, because curiously enough, the horoscope continues to reflect life events whether you’re dead or alive. I like to believe that we have a choice, most of the time, about whether to stay or go.

I do not know who Sue Moses is, but I appreciate this  quote attributed to her:

“Your problem has already been solved. You just haven’t gotten to that point in time yet.”

We’ve left the reflective Pisces Moon behind, but don’t worry, it will return next month. That’s what planetary cycles do. Now we have an Aries Moon to inspire us to begin anew.

Cue Robin Williams as Genie now, please. Onward!
